Bobcats Battle in Three Close Sets in Home Opener of 2018 Season
HAMDEN, Conn. – Morgan Sherwin (Coplay, Pennsylvania) racked up 14 kills and Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) recorded her second double-double but the Quinnipiac volleyball team came up just short against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, 3-0, Friday night in the first match in the Battle of Connecticut.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET (CCSU 25, Quinnipiac 22)
- The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set before the Bobcats rallied to earn six of the next seven points behind two kills from Maggie Baker (Huntington Beach, California) and four from four separate players
- Quinnipiac held onto its lead for a few more points before CCSU went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead, forcing the Bobcats to call a timeout.
- Out of the timeout, the Bobcats won eight of the next 11 points to take a 17-14 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Baker and Sherwin
- After extending the lead to 20-17, the Blue Devils won eight of the next 10 points to take the first set
SECOND SET (CCSU 25, Quinnipiac 22)
- Quinnipiac battled back with a strong end to the second set after CCSU took an initial 11-5 lead in the early stages
- The Bobcats fell behind 14-7 and called a well-timed timeout
- Sherwin recorded a kill out of the timeout and the Bobcats benefited from two attack errors and a service ace
- After CCSU extended its lead back to six at 21-15, the Bobcats stormed back within a point at 23-22 after going on a 7-2 run before the Blue Devils closed out the set with the final two points
THIRD SET (CCSU 25, Quinnipiac 21)
- CCSU came out of the break fast with a 9-2 run before the Bobcats called a timeout to quell the Blue Devils hot start
- The Bobcats stormed back with 12 of the next 15 points to tie the match, 14-14, highlighted by two more kills from Sherwin and Miller recording a kill before the Blue Devils called a timeout.
- The Blue Devils went on a 6-1 run to take a 20-15 lead
- Quinnipiac pulled back within one point, 22-21, thanks to a kill from Kaleigh Oates (Downingtown, Pennsylvania) as well as a bad CCSU set and a final kill from Sherwin before CCSU tallied three straight points to clinch the match
NOTES
- Kat Miller's double-double was her second of the season after recording 10 as a junior in 2017 as she picked up 11 kills and 10 digs against the Blue Devils
- Sherwin recorded a season-high 14 kills, the second-most by a Bobcat through the first five matches to go along with a .500 hitting percentage
- Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) led the Bobcats with 11 digs, just ahead of Miller's 10
- The Bobcats had five players with more than seven kills
- Baker had a solid match with seven kills and eight digs in one of her best performances of the season following an eight-kill performance at UConn
- Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey) led the Bobcats with 29 assists as she nears 2,500 career assists in just her third season with the program
- Quinnipiac recorded more kills (39) than CCSU (36) and led the way with 10 blocks compared to the Blue Devils' seven.
