River Hawks come out on top with a 2-1 OT win

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's soccer team fell to the UMass Lowell River Hawks, 2-1, in overtime. The River Hawks scored both goals on penalty kicks to win the tight contest Wednesday night. Sophomore Lauren Wendland scored her first goal of the season for the Bobcats in the 59th minute.

SCORING SUMMARY

Second Half

(59' - Quinnipiac 1, UMass Lowell 0): Sophomore Lauren Wendland secured the ball outside the right side of the box and hit a lofted, curved ball to the net. The ball went into the back left corner and over UMass Lowell's Farrell O'Shaughnessy.
(66' – Quinnipiac 1, UMass 1): Freshman Meaghan Phillips had to come out to an attacking River Hawk in the box early in the middle of the second half. Her sliding tackle resulted in a penalty kick for UMass Lowell, and Emily Nelson converted taking the game to 1-1.
(96' – Quinnipiac 1, UMass 2): Senior Mackenzie Tibball deflected a cross inside the box that was called a hand ball. UMass Lowell was awarded a penalty kick, and Courtney Coleman scored the game winner.

NOTES

Wendland scored her first goal of the season in the 59th minute of the second half to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Phillips made five saves in the 2-1 loss.
The River Hawks outshot the Bobcats 15-10.
Each team had five corner kick attempts.

The Bobcats will finish the three-game home stand on Sunday, Sept. 15 against Dartmouth. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
