Bobcats Drop Pair of Matches in Season Opener Against San Francisco and Army West Point
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) tallied 21 kills and 21 digs in the opening two games of the 2018 season but the Quinnipiac volleyball team fell in the pair of matches to San Francisco, 3-0, and Army West Point, 3-1, at the first day of the Army Invitational Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quinnipiac and San Francisco went back and forth early in the first set with the Bobcats tying up the set 3-3 with Morgan Sherwin (Coplay, Pennsylvania) tallying a pair of kills and Lydia Jones (Glenn Dale, Maryland) picking up the first point
- After another Jones kill, USF went on a 9-2 run to take a 13-6 lead and put the match out of hand
- In the second set, the Bobcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and was capped off by a Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey) service ace
- After taking a 7-5 lead, the Dons won six straight points to take an 11-7 lead
- The Bobcats pulled back even at 19-19 with kills by Maggie Baker (Huntington Beach, California) and Gabby Horman (Smithtown, New York), as well as a service ace by Miller
- USF won six of the final seven points to take the second set
- Quinnipiac took a 6-1 lead to open the third set after a Sherwin kill and five straight attack errors by San Francisco
- The Dons took six of the next seven points to even the match back up, 7-7
- San Francisco pulled ahead with a 19-13 lead before back-to-back service aces from Miller brought Quinnipiac back within three before the Dons won the set, 25-18
NOTES
- Sherwin dominated offensively for the Bobcats in the first game with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .212
- Pansari racked up 21 assists as well as seven digs, tied for second on the team with Miller
- Miller finished the first match with five kills and seven digs
- Defensively, Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) tallied eight digs to lead Quinnipiac

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bobcats came out blazing in the first set with an early 8-2 lead
- Pansari opened the match with a service ace before Baker and Sherwin had kills and Army committed four attack errors
- Quinnipiac extended its lead to nine points at 16-7 before Army went on a 9-2 run to pull back within two
- The Black Knights tied the match, 22-22, but back-to-back pulled the Bobcats back to a two-point lead thanks to a kill from Jones and a bad Army set
- Three straight points from Army pulled them within a point of taking the set but the Bobcats won four of the final five points to take the set in extra points
- Quinnipiac struggled in the second set as Army rattled off three or more consecutive points five separate times in the match
- Army West Point opened the third set with six of seven points to take a 6-1 lead
- The Black Knights extended their lead to 10 at 19-9 before both teams exchanged points leading to Army's 25-16 set win
- Quinnipiac and Army were neck-and-neck throughout the entire fourth set as neither team pulled ahead by more than four points
- The Bobcats took an 11-7 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Sherwin and another one from Horman
- After Army took a lead, Quinnipiac took a 24-23 lead and had set point after a Miller kill but the Black Knights won four of the final five points to close out the match
NOTES
- Miller had a double-double in the second game against Army with a match-high 16 kills and added 14 digs, her first double-double of the season after 10 in 2017
- Rodriguez was just as impressive on the defensive side as she racked up a team-high 15 digs
- Sherwin followed up her great performance in the first match with nine kills vs. the Black Knights
- Pansari tallied a match-high 38 assists as she set up nearly all 41 kills for the Bobcats
