WEST POINT, N.Y. – Coming off their second straight MAAC Tournament appearance, the Quinnipiac volleyball team is ready to get things going for the 2018 season with the Army Invitational hosted by Army West Point on Friday and Saturday.
The Bobcats recorded 10 wins in 2017 but posted a 9-9 record in conference play to finish sixth in the conference and nearly reach the league semifinals.
2017 Recap
Quinnipiac's 2017 season continued its impressive program turnaround after 21 wins and an 11-7 mark in the MAAC in 2016 as the Bobcats finished second in the league. The Bobcats were led in 2017 by Natalie Alechko's (OId Tappan, New Jersey) Second Team All-MAAC season. Alechko led Quinnipiac with 334 kills and 3.04 kills per set. She also was third on the team with 20 service aces. Quinnipiac won three of its final four matches to qualify for the MAAC Tournament before a narrow 3-2 loss to Iona in the MAAC Tournament after coming back from a 2-0 deficit early in the quarterfinal matchup.
Scouting San Francisco
The Dons come into 2018 after finishing the previous season with just a 3-28 record and a winless 0-18 mark in West Coast Conference (WCC) action. The Dons opened that season with a win vs. Nevada before picking up a pair of five-set victories vs. CSUN and Fresno State. San Francisco's losing streak is 22 games following those pair of victories, and are just 7-55 over the past two seasons.
Scouting Army West Point
The Black Knights went 18-12 in 2017 with an 11-5 mark against Patriot League opponents to finish third in their conference before ultimately falling to Navy in the league's semifinals. Army was picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
Scouting UTSA
Despite a 12-16 overall record, the Roadrunners finished the 2017 season with a 9-5 record in C-USA play before falling to North Texas in the C-USA Semifinals. The Roadrunners closed out the regular season with wins in five of seven matches. This year, UTSA returns its top offensive threats in middle hitter Kara Teel and outside hitter Brianna McCulloch and were picked to finish sixth in the C-USA Preseason Poll.
MAAC Preseason Prediction
The Bobcats were picked to finish fourth in the 2018 MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll after coming off a sixth-place finish in the 2017 regular season standings. Quinnipiac received 65 points with Fairfield, Iona and Marist receiving votes to finish in the top three of the conference. Quinnipiac is in search of its third straight MAAC Tournament appearance.
Kloos Recognized
Elizabeth Kloos '18 received a lot of recognition during the 2017 season for her work in the classroom as she was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team as well as one of eight Bobcats named to the MAAC All-Academic Team.
Set for Success
Returning setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, New Jersey) had a phenomenal year control the court for the Bobcats in 2017 as she paced the Bobcats with 986 assists (8.22 per set), 52 service aces and was fourth on the team with 216 digs and 1.80 digs per set. Pansari was sixth in program history with her assists mark after setting the program record the year before. After just two seasons as the starter, Pansari is third in Division I program history and fourth overall.
Big Time Return
Natalie Alechko returns for the Bobcats after having a phenomenal season on both sides of the ball in 2017. She was first on the team with 334 kills, an average of 3.04 per set, and also managed to finish second on the team with 266 kills (2.42 per set), which was good for second on the team.
Lone Senior
Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) is the only senior on the 2018 edition of the Quinnipiac volleyball team, looking to continue her all around presence on the court. Miller was second on the team with 247 kills last season, averaging 2.40 per set. Miller also had 40 service aces, good for second on the team, and 230 digs (2.23 per set) to finish third on the team.
Dig it Up
Alejandra Rodriguez played inspired volleyball from start to finish last season, thriving as the libero as she racked up 289 digs to average 3.14 per set. Rodriguez came through big when the Bobcats needed as she added on to her impressive numbers following an outstanding freshman season.
Youngsters
Quinnipiac brought in four freshmen to round out its squad for the 2018 season with two players from New York, one from Maryland and one from California. The Bobcats added to an already deep team with a middle hitter (Lydia Jones), outside hitter (Maggie Baker, libero (Daniella Balsano) and setter (Nicole Migliozzi). All four expect to see playing time in 2018 as Quinnipiac continues to bolster its lineup.
