HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team plays its first MAAC home game of the season when it welcomes Manhattan for a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday at Quinnipiac Lacrosse Stadium. A year ago, the Bobcats took a 12-11 decision at Manhattan on a goal from current sophomore Ashley Bobinski with nine seconds left.
LAST TIME OUT (Monmouth 14, Quinnipiac 8)
Quinnipiac dropped its conference opener on the road at Monmouth last weekend, falling by a 14-8 score. After a slow start for the Bobcats (down 6-1), junior attack Jenna Henningsen had a first-half hat trick to help the Bobcats get back within 8-5 at the break, but Monmouth was able to start the second half on a 4-0 run to take control. Senior defender Kiera Kelly had a big day on defense, tallying seven caused turnovers and eight ground balls for the Bobcats.
LAST YEAR vs. MANHATTAN (Quinnipiac 12, Manhattan 11)
Current sophomore Ashley Bobinski scored on a free position shot with just nine seconds remaining in regulation to give the Bobcats a 12-11 road win over Manhattan a year ago at Gaelic Park. Ellie Swenson scored the tying goal with 1:13 remaining off a feed from Allison Kuhn, who led Quinnipiac with five goals. Swenson finished with three goals, while Molly Fitzpatrick had four for the Jaspers.
KELLY NAMED MAAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Quinnipiac lost its MAAC opener at Monmouth last weekend, but not without a spectacular performance from senior defender Kiera Kelly, who set season highs with seven caused turnovers and eight ground balls. Her effort earned her the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week.
KELLY LEADS THE NATION
After her big performance at Monmouth on Saturday (see above), Kiera Kelly has moved into a tie for the national lead in caused turnovers per game at 3.11 (28 in nine games). She is also third in the nation in ground balls per game (4.89), putting her among the nation's top defensive players statistically. In fact, she is the only player in the country who ranks in the top 10 in both caused turnovers and ground balls, and she places in the top three in both.
BOBINSKI NAMED MAAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After her nine-point performance in a March 17 win over Gardner-Webb, sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski earned the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. Bobinski scored on all five of her shots and surpassed her previous career high of eight points, which she set earlier this season against Saint Francis, Pa. (six goals, two assists) in Quinnipiac's first game in its new stadium. Bobinski leads the Bobcats with 33 points on 20 goals and 13 assists.
STRONG BUILDING BLOCKS
As a new head coach last season, Tanya Kotowicz was fortunate to have a couple of strong building blocks in her first recruiting class. Attack Ashley Bobinski and defender Haley Everding were both chosen to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2017 after emerging as starters in their first campaigns. Both have continued in their starting roles this season, with Bobinski leading the team in scoring and Everding playing alongside Kiera Kelly to anchor the Bobcat defense.
BOBCAT LEADERBOARD
Sophomore Ashley Bobinski leads the Bobcats in goals (20), assists (13) and points (33) to date. Junior attack Allison Kuhn is second in goals (14) and points (17), while freshman midfielder Avery Drouin leads with seven assists. Defensively, senior Kiera Kelly leads Quinnipiac in ground balls (44) and caused turnovers (28), while Drouin and Kuhn are tied for the team lead with 14 draw controls. Senior Kyle Larkin has 74 saves and a .507 save percentage in goal, while sophomore Allie Kelsey (pictured) has 26 saves to give the Bobcats an even 100.
A LITTLE LESS DRAMA
So far this season, the Bobcats have been on the winning end of some convincing final scores, including an 18-9 win over Gardner-Webb on March 17. A year ago, Quinnipiac did not have much experience milking leads, as all four of their wins were by one goal, including a 10-9 win over Central Connecticut in Tanya Kotowicz' debut, and a 12-11 win at Manhattan. The Bobcats also edged Iona in overtime 14-13 and clinched a MAAC Tournament bid with a 12-11 win over Siena.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats continue their three-game homestand when they welcome Iona for a 3 p.m. contest on Wednesday before concluding it with a home game against Marist next Saturday at 12 p.m.
