HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's continues MAAC play, hosting Rider on Saturday, Sept. 30 in Hamden at 2:00 PM.
THE MATCHUP: vs. RIDER
- Rider is 5-1-2, with wins over Saint Joseph's, Sacred Heart, Siena, La Salle, and Fairfield.
- The Griffs are led by Head Coach Chad Duernberger who is in his first season.
- Ethan Shaw is the leading scorer for Bryant, with three goals in eight games. Seven other players have at least scored one goal for the Broncs.
- The Bobcats are 5-7 all time versus Rider. Quinnipiac won their last matchup 3-0 on the road in 2022.
- The Bobcats lost 3-0 to Bryant to wrap up non-conference play.
- Bryant scored a goal in the first half and two within two minutes of each other in the second half.
- Defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac men's soccer has been selected as the 2023 Preseason league favorite, as revealed by the conference office on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023.
- The Bobcats earned the No. 1 spot in the Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' poll, collecting a league high 119 points with nine first-place votes.
- Quinnipiac had three student-athletes named to the preseason All-MAAC team, Brage Aasen, Tomas Svecula, and Karl Netzell. Graduate midfielder Brage Aasen was also tabbed as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.
- The Bobcats went 13-5-3 (6-2-2 MAAC) last season, winning the program's second MAAC tournament title in Hamden on Nov. 13, 2022. QU defeated Niagara, 5-2, in the semifinals then outlasted Iona 3-2 in the Championship Game to return to its first NCAA Tournament since 2013.
- The Bobcats were ranked third nationally in goals per game, 2.67, and second in total goals with 56. QU finished No. 60 nationally in RPI.
- Head Coach Eric Da Costa enters his 19th season with the Bobcats in 2023. Da Costa is 147-128-57 during his time at QU. He
- Da Costa has built a strong reputation for success at QU, leading the Bobcats to the postseason conference tournament in 10 of the last 11 seasons (2012 in the NEC, 2013-current in the MAAC).
- The Bobcats have reached the MAAC title game five times under Da Costa, reaching the NCAA Tournament twice. He was also named the 2022 MAAC Coach of the Year for his outstanding leadership.
- Graduate midfielder, and Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, Brage Aasen returns for his fifth season in Hamden looking to lead the Bobcats back to the postseason.
- Aasen was also named to the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch Lists for the 2023 season as announced by the organization on Aug. 11, 2023.
- He has started in 55 matches for the Bobcats, totaling 22 goals and 20 assists. In only 12 games last season, he tallied 17 points.
- The Bobcats also return Graduate forward, Tomas Svecula. In 2022, he was a member of the All-MAAC First Team and is on the 2023 preseason team as well.
- Svecula scored 10 goals to go along with four assists in 2022 and has 22 goals and 11 assists in 57 games started for the Bobcats over four seasons.
- Sophomore keeper Karl Netzell returns for the Bobcats in goal coming off a stellar rookie season in 2022 where he was named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
- He allowed just 22 goals over 18 games last season (1.24 GAA) with only eight of those goals coming during MAAC play.
- In the 2022 campaign the Bobcats went 10-0-1 in Hamden, including MAAC tournament games.
- QU also outscored opponents 38-12 at home, scoring an average of 3.45 goals per game.
- Quinnipiac's fall 2023 schedule features 17 regular seasons contests, with seven non-league games.
- The Bobcats are set to host nine games in Hamden this season, with three in a row to start the season, URI (Sept. 24), BC (Sept. 28), Northeastern (Sept.5).
- They open MAAC play on Sept. 23, traveling to Canisius.
