Bobcats Back in Action
Quinnipiac softball returns to the dirt to open the 2020 season on the West Coast. The Bobcats will take on Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State and Delaware in the LMU Tournament on Feb. 21-23.
A New Era
The Bobcats welcome 10 newcomers to the team including nine first years and one transfer. Three first years hail from Florida – Katherine Rodriguez (Pembroke Pines, infield), Sydney Tedim (Davies, outfield) and Lala Pascual (Miramar, infield/pitcher).
Smith is excited to welcome the newcomers and has high expectations for the young team.
"My expectations for this season are always the same," Smith said. "I always expect greatness in everything we do on and off the field. I have expectations for this team to surprise a lot of people; they are ready to write their own legacy."
Four first years are from the New England area, including Cy Gonzalez (Newington, Conn., infield), Alyssa Noce (Monroe, Conn., outfield), Hannah Wickson (Leicester, Mass., outfield) and Kristina Rossignoll (Peabody, Mass., catcher/infeild). Outfielder Serena Fogg comes to Hamden from Vancouver, Wa., and outfielder Sydney Bruner joins the team from Cottonwood, Idaho. Senior-transfer Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings joins the Quinnipiac squad as a pitcher from Fresno State and is orginially from Chino, Calif.
The Bobcats have eight returners on the roster from the 2019 season. Senior Rachel Marchuk and junior Kayla Jensen will serve as the captains for the 2020 season. Jensen led the team on offense with .339 batting average, 24 runs, 57 hits, seven doubles, one triple and two home runs last year. Marchuk returns as the only senior who has been a part of the team since her first year.
Head Coach Smith Breaks down the Infield
At short stop, we are looking for Katering Rodriguez to make a big-time impact for us. She has experience playing internationally and has high softball IQ. She is very technically sound on defense and will be a big key to our offense.
First-year Cy Gonzalez will be a new face at second base. She has a swag about her you can't teach and is just an all-around athlete. She will make some amazing plays out there with her athleticism and speed. Bridget Nasir will also be playing some second base; she has some of the best hands on the team and is a great defender.
Newcomer Lala Pascual will be a first year on the corner. She brings a big bat to the line-up and also plays for Dominican national team.
Sophomore Alexis Otero returns as an integral part of the Bobcats' infield. She played in all 50 games for the team as a first year, recording a .222 average with 14 runs, 32 hits, eight doubles and two home runs and was also named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team.
Smith Examines the Young Outfield
Junior captain Kayla Jensen will be leading a young outfield. She brings international experience to the team playing for Puerto Rico. She was a big part of our offense last season and we expect the same this year.
Tedim she has a strong arm and can cover a lot of ground in the outfield. Fogg is a hard-working player that does everything you ask and is technically sound on offense and defense.
Marchuk will find time on outfield as a returning senior and captain. She's very versatile and has a cannon for arm.
Bobcats in the Circle
Smith aims to have four solid pitchers in rotation for the 2020 season. Senior transfer Tiffany Kennedy-Cummings looks to make a name for herself in the MAAC. She comes to Quinnipiac from Fresno State. As a junior, she pitched in 11 games, making seven starts. Over 34.1 innings, she pitched a team-best 2.45 ERA for the Bulldogs.
Returning in the circle for Quinnipiac is sophomore Lauren King, who tallied a 2.52 ERA and went 8-8 on the season. King was named to the 2019 MAAC All-Rookie Team and brings experience and velocity to the circle. Sophomore Brooklyn Maguire will also return and looks to build on the experience she gained in her first season.
Pascual will also see time in the circle for the Bobcats. Smith is excited to see Pascual get some time in different positions on defense after experience playing with the Dominican national team.
A Look at the Opposition
Quinnipiac has not faced LMU since 2013 and holds a 1-4 all-time record against the Lions. LMU has already played 11 games this season with a 5-6 record. The Lions played in the Cal State Fullerton Titan Classic Feb. 7-9 and went 2-3 against San Jose State, Middle Tennessee, Utah State, University of California Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. Last weekend, the Lions went 2-3 in the Golden State Plus 27 tournament in Lake Elsinore, Calif. LMU finished the 2019 season with a 40-21 record overall and lost to Iowa State in the NISC Championship.
The Delaware Blue Hens will travel to Los Angeles with a 9-1 record to start the 2020 season. The Blue Hens played in the FGCU Kickoff Classic Feb. 7-9 and went 4-1 against Georgetown, FGCU, UConn, Boston College and LIU. Delaware then swept the Cardinal Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, playing Grambling, Cleveland State, Incarnate Word and Fairleigh Dickinson. The Blue Hens finished the 2019 season with a 22-29 record in the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association).
The Sacramento State Hornets are 6-4 to open the 2020 season. The Hornets also competed in the Golden State Plus 27 tournament along with LMU. Sacramento State won four-straight games to open the season in the NorCal Kickoff. In 2019, the Hornets went 31-25 and ended the season in the double-elimination Big Sky conference tournament against Northern Colorado.
