HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team kicks off its spring break trip of the 2019 season as the Bobcats are on the road in Fort Myers, Florida, to take on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
Scouting Florida Gulf Coast
The Eagles come into the weekend with a 9-4 record on the weekend and have taken each of their first three weekend series. This past weekend, the Eagles took three games of a four-game series against Siena. FGCU is coming off a pair of mid-week games at No. 5 Florida, taking the final game on Wednesday, 7-2, from the Gators. Three Eagles have batting averages over .400 and the team is batting .325 on the season. Joe Kinker leads the team with a .476 batting average, tallying 20 hits with a team-high 16 runs scored and nine RBIs as well as 10 walks to give him a .589 on base percentage. Jay Hayes is batting .429 with three home runs, 18 RBIs as well as six doubles among his 18 hits. The pitching staff has a 2.92 ERA on the season, led by starting pitcher Mason Studstill who is 1-0 with a 0.56 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 16 innings. Reliever Tyler Shuck is 3-0 and has 13 strikeouts in 15 innings. Three of FGCU's four starting pitchers have ERAs below 2.00.
All-Time vs. Florida Gulf Coast
The Bobcats are 1-3 all-time against the Eagles after their first-ever meeting during the 2016 season at Swanson Stadium. Quinnipiac took the third game of the four-game series 10-9, after the Bobcats jumped out to an early lead an hung on against FGCU. Quinnipiac looks to win a game on the weekend for a third straight weekend in this second all-time series between the two teams.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac took both games of last weekend's two-game series at Norfolk State by scores of 14-4 and 7-1. The Bobcats offense came alive in the later stages each game as the Bobcats dominated the Spartans to two straight wins in addition to strong pitching performances.
MAAC Weekly Honors
Left-handed pitcher Chris Enns was named the MAAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career after shutting down the Spartans in Game Two of the weekend series. Enns was the first pitcher to earn the pitcher of the week honors since Thomas Jankins during the 2016 season.
Attempting Perfection
Enns' made one of the best starts of his career on the way to the pitcher of the week honors as he took a perfect game into the sixth inning on Saturday, Quinnipiac's longest perfect game bid since Jankins took a perfect game into the seventh and no-hitter into the eighth on April 16, 2016. Enns struck out a career-high 10 batters in the game, including striking out the side in the second and seventh innings as well as five consecutive batters in the second and third innings.
Tyler's Tearing It Up
Tyler Poulin impressed for a second straight start with his start at Norfolk State last Friday as he struck out six more batters in 5.2 innings on the hill. Poulin's 22 strikeouts through his first three starts are second in the MAAC while his 12.12 strikeouts per nine innings ranks third in the MAAC.
Power Surge
Evan Vulgamore had an impressive weekend for the Bobcats at Norfolk State as he ripped four extra-base hits in the Bobcats in last Friday's win for his most in a game in his career. Vulgamore recorded his second career two-home run game and added two doubles as well as four RBIs and three runs scored. He raised his season-batting average to a team-best .321 on the season while leading the team in home runs, hits, runs scored and RBIs.
Going Streaking
Ian Ostberg extended his hitting streak to seven games to open up the season with a three-hit weekend against Norfolk State. Ostberg recorded his second multi-hit game of the season last Friday with his first double and scored a run. He also picked up his third stolen base of the season. Ostberg is tied for the team lead with a .321 batting average, nine hits and three stolen bases.
Hush Up
Kevin Huscher tallied back-to-back two-hit games last weekend at Norfolk State as he continued his offensive surge to open the year. Huscher also came around to score four runs, including three runs Friday while driving in two RBIs. He is fourth on the team with a .318 batting average, and seven hits while his five RBIs are second and his four runs scored are tied for fourth.
Yes You Maves
Kyle Maves has shined in limited playing time for the Bobcats, including his second straight multi-hit performance on Friday night as he tallied a pair of singles in addition to a run, RBI and stolen base. Maves leads qualifying Quinnipiac freshmen with a .286 batting average this season.
LuLuLutz
Dylan Lutz has hit safely in six of seven games to open the season for the Bobcats as he had a pair of singles over the weekend. Lutz also walked three times as he reached base a total of six times while driving in three RBIs. Lutz is tied for third on the team with eight hits
Making the Most of It
Brian Moskey extended his hitting streak to six games and his on-base streak to seven games to open the 2019 season. Moskey has a nine-game on-base streak dating back to the 2018 season. Moskey had three hits on the weekend, including a pair of his with a double on Friday. Moskey reached base six times and came around to score four runs in addition to stealing two bases. Moskey is second on the team with seven runs while his five walks are first and eight hits are third.
Two Thumbs Up
Matthew Draper has been one of the Bobcats top options out of the bullpen as a freshman, making three appearances and recording five strikeouts over his five innings of work. He has allowed just four hits and two unearned runs. This past weekend at Norfolk State, Draper faced the minimum over his 2.1 innings of work, recording two strikeouts in a perfect relief outing.
Taking a Chance
Samuel LaChance has made his playing time count in three starts this season, recording his in all three starts. This past weekend at Norfolk State, LaChance recorded his first multi-hit game including a double with a walk, RBI and run scored. LaChance is 4 for 9 on the season, good for a .444 batting average to go with a .583 on base percentage.
