HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team continues MAAC play as the Bobcats travel to Western New York to take on the Purple Eagles for a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader on Friday followed by a single game Saturday with each day scheduled for 12 p.m. starts.
Scouting Niagara
The Purple Eagles kicked off their 2019 MAAC schedule taking two out of three from Rider this past weekend. After dropping the first game of the series to the Broncs 13-5, Niagara won the last two games 1-0 and 12-9. As a team, the Purple Eagles have a batting average of .229 as a team. There is no batter with a .300 batting average with 10 or more at bats on the season. Josh Marchese leads the team with a .294 batting average. The Purple Eagles pitching staff has struggled this season, posting a 6.90 ERA. Niagara's strength in their pitching staff lies in their starting pitching. Matthew Brash leads the Purple Eagles with 53 strikeouts in 36.0 innings pitched and has an ERA of 3.00. In his last outing against Rider, Brash threw his first career complete game shutout. Tyler Howard has two complete game victories on the season as well.
All-Time vs. Niagara
Quinnipiac is 7-5 all time against Niagara, with all those matchups coming in MAAC play. Last season, the Bobcats took two out of three games from the Purple Eagles in Hamden.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats had a pair of midweek games as they took on Rhode Island on Tuesday and Dartmouth on Wednesday. The Bobcats fell 5-4 to Rhode Island in a closely contested game, then fell to Dartmouth 9-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Andre the Giant
Andre Marrero is currently on a nine-game hitting streak. Over those nine games he is batting 12 for 31 (.387). Marrero has also tallied at least one RBI in six straight games. He leads the team with a .325 batting average, 17 RBIs and four home runs on the season.
Making the Most of His Chance
Freshman Samuel LaChance has been strong at the plate for the Bobcats so far this season. He has his batting average at .300. In the Bobcats last game against Dartmouth, LaChance had a pair of doubles, his first game with multiple extra-base hits.
Cruz Control
Anthony Cruz has been on a roll as of late, recording hits in four straight games and seven of the past eight. In the Bobcats midweek games, Cruz was 3 for 9 with a double and three runs scored. His batting average is up .319 here in 2019, with 15 hits and 10 runs scored in 12 total games.
Open Season
Ian Ostberg picked up three hits in eight at bats during the Bobcats pair of midweek games with a trio of singles. He is up to 22 hits on the season, good for third on the team to go with his nine runs scored and nine RBIs. Ostberg is now batting .268 on the season.
Pullin' a Poulin
Tyler Poulin is set to make his seventh start of the season on Friday afternoon, and has been one of the Bobcats best starters on the year. Poulin is 3-1 on the season after allowing no runs on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in a win against Saint Peter's last Saturday. Poulin has 38 strikeouts in 36 innings, tied for fourth in the MAAC while his three wins are tied for the league lead.
MAAC Leaders
The Bobcats have some of the top players in the MAAC this season, and are among the leaders statistically in several categories. Evan Vulgamore is fifth in the league with a .548 slugging percentage and 40 total bases, Kyle Maves is fifth with a .417 on base percentage and tied for fifth with nine steals, Andre Marrero is tied for first with nine steals and tied for second with four home runs, Arthur Correira has the fourth lowest opponent batting average at .211 while Tyler Poulin is tied for first with three wins, third with 36 innings pitch and fourth with 38 strikeouts.
Delaney's Milestone
With the 13-0 win over Saint Peter's last Saturday afternoon, head coach John Delaney recorded his 100th victory as the Bobcats head coach. He is the third coach in Quinnipiac baseball history to record 100 wins, joining Dan "Skip" Gooley (439 wins) and Earl Matthewson (174 wins) as the only other coaches to reach 100 wins.
