HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team will look to pick up a key MAAC win when it welcomes Marist to Hamden for a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday. The Red Foxes ended Quinnipiac's season last year with an opening round MAAC Tournament win in Poughkeepsie after the Bobcats qualified for the MAAC postseason for the first time.
LAST TIME OUT (IONA 9, QUINNIPIAC 7)
Quinnipiac fell into a 5-0 hole at the end of the first half and then rallied to come back within a single goal at 8-7 with 1:11 left, but Iona was able to win the key draw control and kill off the clock before scoring with two seconds left to escape with a 9-7 win over the Bobcats on Wednesday. After a scoreless first half, Ashley Bobinski finally broke the ice for Quinnipiac just over eight minutes into the second half to close the lead to 5-1, and a 3-0 Bobcat run made the score 6-4 as Avery Drouin, Brianna Fitzgerald and Allison Kuhn tallied goals within a span of less than three minutes. After Iona went ahead 8-5, Loren Antonacci and Drouin scored goals 38 seconds apart to close it to 8-7, but Iona was able to hang on. Drouin was the lone Bobcat with two goals while Kiera Kelly led the defensive effort with five caused turnovers and six ground balls.
LAST YEAR vs. MARIST
The Red Foxes took two meetings from Quinnipiac a year ago in Poughkeepsie, winning 10-4 in the regular season and then eliminating the Bobcats from their first-ever MAAC Tournament with a 17-10 opening round win. The postseason match-up was tighter than the score indicated, as Quinnipiac trailed 10-9 with under 12 minutes to play before the Red Foxes closed on a 7-1 run. Current sophomore Brianna Fitzgerald had three goals for the Bobcats, while Natalie Bonaroti had four goals for Marist.
KELLY AMONG BEST IN NATION
Heading into this weekend's play, senior defender Kiera Kelly ranks second in the nation in both ground balls per game (4.82) and caused turnovers per game (3.18). She is the only player in the country who ranks in the top 10 in both categories. USC goalie Gussie Johns has the lead in ground balls with 5.2 and Binghamton's Jacqueline Kennedy is tops in the country in caused turnovers at 3.3. Kelly vaulted up the statistical charts after an eight-ground ball, seven-caused turnover performance at Monmouth on March 24, which earned her the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Award. She became the second MAAC weekly honoree of the season for the Bobcats, joining sophomore Ashley Bobinski (see below).
BOBINSKI NAMED MAAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After her nine-point performance in a March 17 win over Gardner-Webb, sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski earned the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. Bobinski scored on all five of her shots and added four assists, surpassing her previous career high of eight points, which she set earlier this season against Saint Francis, Pa. (six goals, two assists). Bobinski leads the Bobcats with 36 points on 21 goals and 15 assists.
CONTI EARNS MAAC STUDENT-ATHLETE HONOR
Junior defender Aubrey Conti was named the MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, an award that goes to an athlete who excels in the classroom and who had an impact performance over the previous week. Conti, who carries a 3.9 GPA as an accounting major, helped the Quinnipiac defense hold Manhattan to only six goals in an 11-6 win on Saturday, including just two in the second half.
BOBCAT LEADERBOARD
Sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski leads the Bobcats in goals (22), assists (15) and points (37). Junior attack Allison Kuhn is second in goals (19) and points (23), while freshman midfielder Avery Drouin is second with eight assists. Defensively, Kiera Kelly leads Quinnipiac in ground balls (53) and caused turnovers (35), while Brianna Fitzgerald has the lead with 20 draw controls. Senior goalkeeper Kyle Larkin has 90 saves and a .519 save percentage in goal.
STRONG BUILDING BLOCKS
As a new head coach last season, Tanya Kotowicz was fortunate to have a couple of strong building blocks in her first recruiting class. Attack Ashley Bobinski and defender Haley Everding were both chosen to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2017 after emerging as starters in their first campaigns. Both have continued in their starting roles this season, with Bobinski leading the team in scoring and Everding playing alongside Kiera Kelly to anchor the Bobcats defense.
A LITTLE LESS DRAMA
So far this season, the Bobcats have been on the winning end of some convincing final scores, including an 18-9 win over Gardner-Webb on March 17. A year ago, Quinnipiac did not have much experience milking leads, as all four of their wins were by one goal, including a 10-9 win over Central Connecticut in Tanya Kotowicz's debut.
