HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac outdoor track and field team will head down the road to New Haven on Sunday to participate in the Yale Springtime Invitational, its final event before next weekend's MAAC Championships.
The Bobcats head into the final weekend of the regular season looking to have another strong performance in the MAAC Championships this spring. In the winter, Quinnipiac finished second at the MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, its highest-ever finish, ending up just two points ahead of Rider in a narrow battle for second.
In addition, the Bobcats will honor their seniors on Sunday after their final local home meet. Quinnipiac has 12 seniors on this year's squad: sprinter/hurdler Christina Barbaro, javelin thrower Jessica Caso, middle distance runner Darby Ginley, distance runner Harmony Grodsky, jumper Emily Joerg, sprinter/hurdler Jessica Lee, distance runner Victoria Maceira, thrower Mackenzie Merkel, sprinter/jumper Leah Pfrommer, middle distance runner Kaleigh Roberts, distance runner Katey Veron and distance runner Emily Wolff.
This year's senior class has put a significant dent in the Quinnipiac top 10 lists, led by Lee, who has school records in five events in both the indoor and outdoor seasons: the 60-meter dash, the 60-meter hurdles, the 100-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash. Roberts is also the school-record holder in the 1500 meters and the mile, and is part of school records in the 4x800 relay and the distance medley relay, while Pfrommer holds the school mark in the long jump.
Other seniors near the top of the Quinnipiac record books include Barbaro, who set a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles at the MAAC Outdoor Championships last year, which is now second-best in QU history behind junior Marlo Wehrer (she set the new record this year). Barbaro is also second in the 60-meter hurdles, behind Lee, and third in the 500 meters. Wolff has made her mark in the distance events, ranking second in the 5000, third in the 3000 and fourth in the 10,000. Ginley, meanwhile, is part of a sprint medley relay team that posted the second-fastest time in school history.
In the field events, Joerg ranks third in both the triple jump and the high jump. Merkel stands in second place in the discus and hammer throw, and third in the shot put, while Caso is fourth in the javelin.
The Yale Springtime Invitational kicks off at 10 a.m. with the long jump, while running events start at 11:30 a.m. with the 4x100 relay. The final scheduled track event is the 4x400 relay at 4:15 p.m.
After competing at Yale, the Bobcats will head to Lawrenceville, New Jersey next weekend for the 2018 MAAC Track and Field Championships on May 5-6, hosted by Rider University. Several Bobcats have already qualified for the ECAC Championships, which will be held on May 12-13 at Princeton University, while the NCAA East Regionals for those who qualify are held May 24-26 in Tampa, Florida.
