HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac baseball team concludes the 17-game southern portion of its schedule when it heads to UNC Wilmington for a three-game series on Friday-Sunday. The Bobcats have won five of their last six, including a two-game sweep of Charleston on Tuesday and Wednesday.
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON SERIES
Quinnipiac used a comeback performance for a 6-5 win on Tuesday and a strong pitching effort in a 2-1 win on Wednesday to take a pair of one-run wins over the Cougars, who came into the week with a 13-3 record. In the first game, the Bobcats were down 5-3 in the eighth when junior Liam Scafariello hit a two-run homer to tie it. Sophomore Evan Vulgamore then drove home the winning run in the ninth with an RBI single to score Ian Ostberg, who led off with a single. Freshman Joe Preciado threw the final three innings to get the win in relief. In the second game, freshman Robert Lewis made his first start and got the win, allowing one run on five hits over five innings. Freshman Arthur Correira threw two hitless innings of relief, senior Wyatt Hamilton worked the eighth inning, striking out two batters to leave the tying run on third, and Mark Davis worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save. Junior Brian Moskey was 4-for-4 to raise his batting average to .400 on the year, while sophomore Andre Morrero drove home the game-winning run with an RBI double in the fourth.
LET'S HIT THE ROAD
The Quinnipiac baseball team will begin the 2018 season with 18 straight road games. The beginning of the season will see the Bobcats playing in Texas, Virginia, and both North and South Carolina. Quinnipiac is set to play at home for the first time this season on March 21, when they will take on the Bulldogs from Yale, after a mid-week road contest at UConn on Tuesday.
HEAD COACH JOHN DELANEY
Head Coach John Delaney returns for his fourth season at the helm with Quinnipiac baseball. He has amassed 70 wins in his three-plus years as head coach. Qunnipiac won 29 games in 2015, which ties the program record for most wins in a single season. The Bobcats went 29-27 (15-9 MAAC) overall that year, finishing No. 3 in the conference standings - their highest regular-season finish in the conference since finishing No. 1 in 2007, when Delaney played for the team.
MAAC PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac baseball was picked to finish 8th in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office on February 7, 2018. The Bobcats were placed between Siena and Rider. Marist was slated to finish 1st, garnering seven first-place votes, with Canisius, Fairfield, and Niagara rounding out the top four.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
UNC Wilmington comes in with an 11-6 record on the year. Mason Berne (.383-3 HR-15 RBI) and Ryan Jeffers (.328-5-14) pace the Seahawks' offensive attack, while starters Alex Royalty (2-1, 2.84) and Zarion Sharpe (1-2, 3.12) and closer Clarke Cota (five saves) are off to strong starts on the mound. UNC Wilmington lost its last two games to Ohio State, but took two out of three at Arizona State before that.
IT'S ABOUT HOW YOU START
Senior Taylor Luciani, senior Brandon Shileikis, and junior Tyler Poulin each have two wins in 4 four games started to begin the season. All three of their ERAs are currently under 4 (Poulin 1.77, Luciani 3.91, Shileikis 3.97)
AND HOW YOU FINISH
The Bobcat offense has found a way to score runs late in games this season. Quinnipiac has scored at least one run in the ninth inning in six of their 14 games this season, including the game winning run on Tuesday against Charleston. The Bobcats are 5-1 when doing so.
BRING OUT THE BOOM STICKS

The .400 CLUB
