NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Emily Wolff won the 5000 meters by 12 seconds (17:01.47) and junior Carly Timpson took first place in the high jump (1.70 meters) as the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team picked up 31 points on the first day of the MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center.
Jessica Lee also advanced to the finals in three events, which will take place tomorrow, the 60 meters, the 60-meter hurdles and the 200 meters. Lee broke her own MAAC meet record in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.32, which was .07 of her own personal best set earlier this winter.
Abby Frank joined Lee in qualifying for the 60-meter finals tomorrow. Marlo Wehrer was second in the prelims in the 400 (winning her heat) and will be in the finals tomorrow, along with Melissa Solomon. Meghan Curtin and Alyson Caron both qualified for the finals in the 800 meters, while Kaleigh Roberts advanced to the finals in the mile.
Timpson added a fifth-place finish in the weight throw to finish the day with 14 points. Leah Pfrommer finished in seventh place in the long jump and Meghan Scullin came in eighth in the long jump to also score points for the Bobcats in today's field events.
"It was a really good day for us," said head coach Carolyn Martin. "We had a lot of people advance and perform higher than their seed times. We've set ourselves up with a chance to finish as high as second, which would be great for our program. We've been fortunate to have some great individuals to compete for us, but we're starting to develop the depth to compete at a higher level. Tomorrow should be an exciting day.."
The second day of the championships begins tomorrow at 4 p.m. with the one-mile run, where Roberts is expected to be a top contender for the title.
