Women's Golf Heads to Delaware Invitational for Final Fall Event

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's golf team concludes its fall schedule when it travels to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware for the Blue Hen Invitational. The event, hosted by the University of Delaware, runs from Saturday, October 20th to Sunday, October 21st.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
Quinnipiac set a new program record for lowest team stroke average last season (310), breaking the old mark by 10 strokes.
DOMINANT FALL IN 2017
The Bobcats were one of four NCAA Division I teams in the country to win three tournaments after winning the Dartmouth Invitational, the Hartford Invitational and the St. John's Invitational. Quinnipiac completed the first semester with its highest rating in program history at 124.
ACES IN THE CLASSROOM
The Quinnipiac women's golf team earned one of the top 25 team grade point averages in all of Division I during the 2018-19 season, earning All-Scholar Team distinction from the Women's Golf Coaches Association, the organization announced today. The Bobcats recorded a stellar 3.715 team GPA to rank tied for 13th in all of Division I. Quinnipiac was also tied for 21st in team grade point average in all three NCAA divisions combined.
THREE STRAIGHT MAAC HONORS FOR LAI
Last spring, sophomore Queenie Lai won the MAAC Women's Golfer of the Week honor for three straight weeks in April. She captured the honor after leading the Bobcats with a fifth-place finish with a 229 (75-78-76) at the Babs Steffens Hatter Collegiate, hosted by Stetson. She also earned it by finishing tied for third at the Low Country Intercollegiate out of 76 competitors with a 76-75-151. Earlier on the same trip, she earned her first award by coming in tied for sixth with a 78-75-153 at the Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida.
DOMINATING THE AWARDS
The three straight MAAC honors for Lai (see above) made it four straight weeks that the Bobcats earned the MAAC Women's Golfer of the Week award when they have competed. On Feb. 28, junior Alexandra Sazhin earned the distinction after a strong showing (13th out of over 200 competitors) at the Kiaweh Island Invitational.
SAZHIN BREAKS SINGLE-SEASON BIRDIE RECORD
Sazhin moved into the top spot in the Quinnipiac record books last season when she bagged three birdies in the second round of the Low Country Intercollegiate. That gave her 46 on the season, surpassing the old school record of 44, which was set by current senior Luciana Tobia-Palza as a freshman in 2015-16. Sazhin currently has 49 to lead the Bobcats, while Lai is up to 37 and Tobia-Palza has 36.
THE BOBCATS AT THE TOP
Three-time conference Coach of the Year John O'Connor's squad features two former MAAC Players and Rookies of the Year in Luciana Tobia-Palza, who earned both awards in 2016, and Alexandra Sazhin, who collected both honors in 2017. In addition, Estefania Morales also earned all-conference honors in 2017.

- The Bobcats started strong in the fall portion of their 2018-19 schedule. Quinnipiac is riding high after a second place finish at the Brown Bear Invitational. Alexandra Sazhin (New Fairfield, Connecticut) finished fourth overall at the tournament.
- The Bobcats scored a solid finish at the Yale Fall Women's Intercollegiate a few weeks ago, placing 10th out of 17 teams.
- Early in the fall season, Quinnipiac tied for eighth out 16 teams at the Boston College Intercollegiate and placed sixth out of 16 at the Dartmouth Invitational to kick off the season.

- Sazhin currently leads the Bobcats with the best scoring average, shooting an average of 76.40 so far this season.
- Sazhin's 76.40 dipped from 77.30 last week after an extremely weekend at the Brown Invitational. The junior shot a season-low 71, which stands as a personal low in 2018 and the lowest team score for a single round.
- Sazhin also birded six holes on the day, the new team high in a single round so far in 2018.
- Elena Lopez is currently right behind with a 77.50 after starting her Quinnipiac career extremely strong.
- Sazhin and Lopez have combined for the second lowest rounds so far this season as each player has scored a 72 so far this season.
- Sazhin's 72 came in the Bobcats' second round of the Yale Fall Women's Intercollegiate.
- Lopez's 72 came in the final round of the tournament as the Bobcats' individual golfer.
- Sazhin currently leads the Bobcats with 25 birdies so far this season with Lopez (14), Elena YBarra (14), Luciana Tobia-Palza (10), Queenie Lai (10) following in second and third.
- The four new members of the Bobcats this fall are Elena Lopez (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence High School), Darby Lillibridge (Geneva, Ill. / Geneva Community High School), Amanda Tully (Brewster, N.Y. / Carmel High School) and Casey Oppenheimer (Conshocken, Pa. / AIM Academy).
- The Class of 2022 will join a Bobcat program that stacks up well for the coming year, with most of its top performers returning, including seniors Julia Kemmling and Luciana Tobia-Palza, junior Alexandra Sazhin, and sophomores Elena Ybarra and Queenie Lai, all of whom were consistent scorers last season. Quinnipiac won MAAC titles in 2016 and 2017.
