ON THE ROAD AGAIN
This weekend the Quinnipiac softball team will kick off their third tournament of the 2017 season as the Bobcats travel to Los Angeles, California and Northridge, California to take part in the CSUN/LMU Tournament.
SCOUTING BRYANT
The Bulldogs are off to a slow 1-9 start and have lost their last seven games. Bryant's offense is led by Haylee Haas who leads the team with a .375 batting average and three Rbi's.
SCOUTING ARIZONA
The Wildcats come into the tournament as the No. 5 team in the nation according to the most recent USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. Arizona boasts an 18-1 record, having already defeated No. 21 Baylor and No. 23 Brigham Young, and only suffering one loss to No. 1 Florida State in a 1-0 game. Arizona's deep offense is led by Dejah Mulipola and Katiyana Mauga. Mulipola has a .510 batting average, five home runs and 21 Rbi's, while Mauga has a .326 batting average, seven home runs and 17 Rbi's. Danielle O'Toole is the ace of the pitching staff, boasting a record of 10-1 with a .51 ERA in 68 innings, while recording 76 strikeouts.
SCOUTING NORTH DAKOTA
The Fighting Hawks come into the tournament with a 9-11 record, after going 3-7 in its last 10 games. North Dakota's offense is led by Taylor Nadler, who is batting .308 on the season and has four home runs and 12 Rbi's so far. Pitcher Kaylin VanDomelen has four wins with an ERA of 1.45 with 61 strikeouts in 58 innings.
SCOUTING BOISE STATE
The Broncos come into the weekend with a 12-5 record and haven't played any in-conference teams yet. Boise State's offense is lead by Rebekah Cervantes and Makenzie Sullivan. Cervantes has a .489 batting average and has hit four homers and driven in 19 runs, while Sullivan has a .458 batting average and four home runs and driven in 16 runs.
SCOUTING CSU BAKERSFIELD
The 'Runners are off to a slow 2-10 start and have lost two straight coming into the tournament. The 'Runners are led on offense by Maddi Clark, who has a .346 batting average and leads the team with eight Rbi's.
MARVELOUS MAGANA
Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) has been one of the team's most consistent hitters so far this season. In eight games, Magana has a .481 batting average with a team-leading two home runs and 10 Rbi's.
SETTLING IN
Junior transfer Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) has made herself right at home in the Bobcats' lineup so far this season. Cordeiro has a .346 batting average and five Rbi's.
THE MAAC PRESEASON POLL
The Quinnipiac University softball team was picked to finish sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017.
BOBCAT RETURNEES
Quinnipiac returns 11 players from last year's squad, seven of which are juniors or seniors. In addition the Bobcats will look to a strong core of four sophomores who each played in at least 40 games including Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) and Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) seeing time in more than 40 games. Troyan led the team in batting average (.301), slugging percentage (.466) and second in home runs (2).
VETS IN THE BOX
The Bobcats return three of the four players that led the team in hits in Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York), Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) and Magana. Magana led the team in hits (46), doubles (9), second in batting average (.282) and in total bases (57). Heimbach led the team in on-base percentage (.390), second in stolen bases (5) and runs (21). Finley led the team in home runs (4), triples (2), RBI's (22) and total bases (63).
WELCOME ABOARD
Five new players join the Bobcats in three freshman, Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California), Megan Dyson (Bellmawr, New Jersey) and Long, as well as two junior transfers, Lexi Courtney (Scapposse, Oregon) and Cordeiro.
HAMDEN ADVANTAGE
Last season, the Bobcats registered an 11-9 home record at the QU Softball Field.
HEAD COACH JILL KARWOSKI
Head coach Jill Karwoski will guide Quinnipiac in her fourth season at the helm in the hopes of improving on a 2016 season that saw Quinnipiac finish the year at 28-29 overall, which was 10 wins better than the 18 wins the team earned in 2015.
ON DECK
After the CSUN/LMU Tournament, the Bobcats will be back in action on Wednesday, March 15 to take on the University of California Riverside in a doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. pacific.
