LOS ANGELES, California - The Quinnipiac softball team split in a doubleheader, defeating Bryant, 11-3, and falling to No. 5 Arizona, 7-1, on the first day of competition at the CSUN/LMU Tournament on Friday.
With the split, the Bobcats move to 4-6 on the season.
In the first game against Bryant, Quinnipiac's offense exploded for 11 runs, eight of which came in one inning, which is the most so far this season Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) went 3-for-3 from the plate, including two home runs and driving in three runs. Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) drove in two runs and Kendall Brundrett (San Diego, California) earned her first win of the season.
The Bobcats fell behind early in the contest as Bryant got on the board in the bottom of the first, but Quinnipiac came back in the second inning to score two runs and never looked back.
Taking a 2-1 lead into the third, Magana led off the inning with a double to right center and Drake followed with a two-run homerun to give Quinnipiac a 4-1 lead. Two batters later, Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) doubled, driving in Cordeiro to put Quinnipiac up 5-1.
Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) singled home Courtney to give the Bobcats a commanding 6-1 lead. Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) and Kat Vitale (Cheshire, Connecticut) hit back to back singles to load the bases with still one out.
Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) stepped to the plate and knocked a single to left, driving in one to giving the Bobcats a 7-1 lead. Magana came back to bat again and slapped a two-run double to left center to give the Bobcats a 9-1 lead. Marchuk came home in the next at-bat on an illegal pitch to cap the eight-run inning.
Bryant added two more runs before Drake launched her second home run of the game in the fifth.
Brundrett went five innings, giving up only three runs on two hits and striking out two in her first win of the season.
In Quinnipiac's second game, Arizona jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Bobcats were finally able to strike in the seventh on a home run from Keilani Finley (Alameda, California).
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday, when it takes on the North Dakota Fighting Hawks at 10:30 a.m. pacific (1:30 p.m. eastern) in Northridge, California.
