
QU Women's Tennis Stays Unbeaten in MAAC Play, Beats Niagara, 6-1

NIAGARA FALLS, New York - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team was able to cruise past Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Niagara, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon to stay stay undefeated in conference play so far this season.
The victory improves the Bobcats record to 4-3 (3-0 MAAC) overall, while the Purple Eagles fall to 1-5 on the season. Including MAAC Tournament matches, the Bobcats are now 30-0 in matches against MAAC opponents since joining the new league coming from the Northeast Conference.
Sydney Young (Austin, Texas), Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut), Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) and Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) all earned multiple victories on the day.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match where Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) and Lohaphaisan defeated Ali Hutchinson and Jasmin Vargas, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles match followed where Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Rodriguez cruised past Shannon Wong and Stella Peisakhova, 6-2, to secure the doubles point for the Bobcats. Young and Horton secured the sweep with a 6-3 win over the duo of Sharlee Deshmukh and Sansriti Ranjan. The win for Young and Horton was their 16th of the season, which is tops on the team. The Bobcats three straight doubles wins keeps their streak of nine-straight doubles wins in MAAC duals alive.
As the Bobcats held a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles, they were able to ride the momentum to win five of six singles matches to secure the win.
In the No. 3 singles match, Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) swept Deshmukh in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Horton followed with a win of her own over Wong in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Rodriguez secured the Bobcats win with her match victory over Hutchinson in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. Horton and Rodriguez's wins were their 25th of the season, tying them for second most this season.
Play continued in the No. 4 singles draw, where Young defeated Ranjan in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. The win was Young's 27th of the season, which is tops on the team. In the No. 1 singles match, Rencheli fell to Peisakhova in three tough sets. Rencheli took the first set 6-4, but fell in the second, 7-6 (5). In the rubber set, Rencheli battled hard but ultimately fell 10-6. The loss ended the Bobcats 16-match win-streak in singles play against MAAC opponents. In the final match of the day, Lohaphaisan defeated Vargas in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1.
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 19, when they travel to take on the Buffalo Bulls at noon.
