
QU Women's Tennis Claims Doubles Point in Loss Against Seton Hall

NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's tennis team was able to secure the doubles point against Big East foe Seton Hall, but lost the match, 5-2, at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club on Saturday evening.
With the loss the Bobcats fall to 3-3 on the season, while the Pirates improve to 3-1.
Quinnipiac and Seton Hall started the day in doubles play, as the Pirates duo of Thandy Kangwa and Katie Kim defeated the senior Bobcats duo of Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) and Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut), 6-2. However, Quinnipiac would rally back and sweep the final two doubles matches.
Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) took on Melody Taal and Michal Matson and defeated the Pirates duo, 6-4. The win gives the Rencheli and Rodriguez duo 11 on the year, which is second on the team behind Horton and Young. In the No. 3 doubles match, Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) and Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) took on Anna Fajnorova and Krista Cerpina, winning the match 6-4, to claim the doubles point, giving the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead.
Seton Hall tied the match in the No. 2 singles match where Horton took on Matson. Matson got the best of Horton by defeating her in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. Young was able to get the Bobcats back on track in the No. 5 singles match when she defeated Anniek Jansen in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-0. The win gave Young her 24th of the season, which is tops on the team.
Seton Hall would close the match winning the final four singles matches, sealing a Bobcats loss. Rodriguez fell to Taal in straight sets 6-2 and 6-3. Rencheli then challenged Kangwa in the No. 1 singles match, but fell in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-1. In the No. 6 singles bout, Carpina barely squeaked past Lohaphaisan, 6-4 and 7-5 in straight sets. The day came to a close in the No. 2 singles match when Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) fell to Kim. Lu and Kim split the first two sets 6-1 apiece, but Kim barely edged Lu in the rubber set, 7-5.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team will look to get back on track when it travels to take on MAAC foe Niagara University on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. After their bout against the Purple Eagles, the Bobcats will then travel to take on Buffalo on Sunday, Feb. 19, at noon.
