BRYAN, Texas - The Quinnipiac University women's golf team improved by 10 strokes on the second round of the 2016 NCAA Regional in Bryan, Texas. The Bobcats shot a combined 316 for the second day of the three-round tournament, led by Taylor Lambrou's (Baldwin, New York) team-, tournament-best 76 ( 4).
"Some of the players struggled a little today," head coach John O'Connor said. "It's been two days of 85 degree weather, and they're very tired. This has been a very stressful tournament. Nicole Scola is handling it well and Taylor [Lambrou] put together a great round today."
Nicole Scola (Westerly, Rhode Island) continues to produce for the Bobcats, finishing the second round with a 77 ( 5) for the afternoon. The second-day tally saw her shave four strokes off her first-round total. Despite shooting a stroke higher on the back nine, Scola improved by five strokes on the front nine, highlighted by a birdie on hole No. 3. Scola was even on the front nine before a double bogey on hole No. 9 put her at 2 for the field's first nine holes.
Lambrou, starting the day on hole No. 10, shot par on her first four holes of the day, before double bogeys on holes No. 14 and 16 followed by a bogey on 17 put her at 5 for the back nine. She then shot par on six of her final nine holes on the day, with a birdie on hole No. 5, to finish at 2 on the front nine for a seven-stroke improvement on The Traditions' first nine holes.
"I tried to keep it simple and stay focused," Lambrou said. "I shot about the same on the back nine as I did yesterday, but really improved on the back nine. I owe had 29 putts today, so I had a lot of one-putt holes which helped."
Scola's place at the top of the Bobcats' leaderboard is a return to prominence for the Bobcat junior, who entered the season as Quinnipiac's top player. Through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, Scola leads Quinnipiac with a 158 ( 14).
"It's a great feeling. I struggled individually a lot this season, so it's very encouraging to see my game come back together," Scola said. "There so many great players - Luciana, Julia, Jenn and Taylor all put up some incredible scores, so it's a huge honor to be able to lead this team."
Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) improved on their previous round's score. Tobia followed her 85 ( 13) on Thursday with an 82 ( 10). Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) opened the day at seven-over for the first nine holes, before she finished at three-over for the back nine. Despite her total sitting at three strokes higher than the previous round, Kemmling shot three strokes better on the front nine.
"Hopefully tomorrow will be more consistent," O'Connor said. " I'd like to see more rounds in the 70's. Again, they have to shoot at and hit their targets."
Quinnipiac will be back at Traditions Golf Club for the final round of the 2016 NCAA Bryan Regional on Saturday, May 7.
