BRYAN, Texas - The Quinnipiac University women's golf team completed the final day of the 2016 NCAA Regional in Bryan, Texas in 18th place. Quinnipiac freshman Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) led Quinnipiac for the final round, while Nicola Scola (Westerly, Rhode Island) led the Bobcats for the tournament.
"It's been an amazing trip - everything about this has been exciting, thrilling, exhilarating," head coach John O'Connor said. "I'm very proud of this team and the way they played. I never expected this to be THE year, but I'm happy for all of them and the program."
Scola completed the tournament as the Bobcats' leader with a 243 (+27). Scale opened the tournament with an 81 on Thursday, followed by a 77 on Friday and finally, an 85 (+13) for the final round on Saturday.
Kemmling led Quinnipiac after the first round of the tournament, carding a 79 (+7) before following with an 82 (+10) on Friday and an 83 (+11) on Saturday for a combined score of 244 (+28) for the three-day tournament.
Senior Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York), who was playing the final round of her four-year collegiate career, finished with an 85 (+13) for the final round. Lambrou was solid through the first nine holes of the day at four-over, before shooting nine-over down the stretch. Saturday's score gave her a 244 (+28) for the tournament.
"Taylor Lambrou has worked her way into becoming a very, very good golfer. She's a great kid - always has a smile on her face and we're going to miss both of them dearly."
Freshman stand-out Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) finished with a 252 (+36) for the tournament. Senior captain Jenn Whaley (Farmington, Connecticut) - who also played the final round of her four-year career, that saw her serve as team captain for the last three seasons, opened the final round even through the first seven holes of the day. She finished the tournament at 267.
"I don't think I can tell you what Jenn Whaley means to this team. She's done everything I've ever asked of her," O'Connor said. "She's done a great job organizing, competing, and planning. She's very special - one of my favorite people."
The Bobcats' incredible season signals the next step in the growth of the six-year old program, which was created in 2010 and culminated in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in just its third season in the league.
Quinnipiac women's golf was also the one of nine Quinnipiac athletic programs to compete in a postseason tournament in 2015-16, joining women's cross country (NCAA), National Championship women's rugby (NCVWRA), men's ice hockey (NCAA Frozen Four), women's ice hockey (NCAA), women's basketball (WNIT), acrobatics & tumbling (NCATA), women's outdoor track (NCAA), women's tennis (NCAA) and men's lacrosse (NCAA). Head coach John O'Connor was also one of nine Quinnipiac head coaches honored with a conference Coach of the Year honor.
