Defending the Crown
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team looks to defend their back-to-back MAAC Tournament championships this week at the 2016 MAAC Tournament down in West Windsor, New Jersey. The Bobcats will face the No. 4 seed Niagara in a rematch of the 2015 MAAC Championship with the winner facing the winner of No. 2 seed Siena and No. 3 seed Marist.
All-Time Series vs. Niagara
The Bobcats are 4-0 all-time against the Purple Eagle, including this season's 7-0 sweep on April 2nd in Hamden, Connecticut. Last season, the Bobcats edged the Purple Eagles on the road before defeating Niagara to win the 2015 MAAC Championship, 4-0, in West Windsor, New Jersey. Sydney Young won the game-winning match for the Bobcats against Niagara's new No. 1, Stella Peisakhova.
Scouting the Purple Eagles
Niagara is 9-11 this season and finished 5-2 in the MAAC, but due to tiebreakers fell to the No. 4 seed. Niagara won its final two MAAC matches of the season against Marist and Saint Peter's before falling to Mercyhurst in a non-conference matchup on April 21st. Shannon Wong leads the team in singles wins with 13, going 8-6 at No. 4 singles while Halley Hollins is 12-12 and 10-9 at No. 2 singles. Stella Peisakhova has 11 wins for the Purple Eagles and a 10-9 record at No. 1 singles.
All-Time Series vs. Siena
Quinnipiac is a perfect 6-0 against the Siena Saints dating back to the 2005-06 season, with the Bobcats taking this season's meeting at the Saints, 6-1. Sophia Dzulynsky, Sitilia Rencheli and Proyfon Lohaphaisan all won two individual matches in the match for the Bobcats.
Scouting the Saints
Siena is much improved this season coming into their match in the Bobcats' regular season finale. The Saints boast a winning record at 10-9 and finished 5-2 in the MAAC this season. Siena fell in three of its final five matches of the season, but ended on a high note with a 7-0 sweep of Saint Peter's to clinch the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Allysa Singh is 15-4 in singles play, including 14-4 record at No. 4 singles and went a perfect 7-0 in MAAC play. Natalie Weaver finished 11-4 with all 15 of her matches at No. 5 singles while Mitsuki Fukamachi went 11-7 with a 10-7 mark at No. 3 singles. In doubles play, Fukamachi and Ali Garrity are 10-8 at No. 1 doubles to lead the team.
All-Time vs. Marist
Quinnipiac is 9-0 in their nine all-time meetings dating back to the 2009 season. The Bobcats and Red Foxes have met five times since the Bobcats joined the MAAC, including this season's 6-1 victory for Quinnipiac. Both teams have also met in the semifinals of the MAAC tournament in each of the past two seasons. Sydney Young leads the Bobcats with a 9-0 record individually against the Red Foxes.
Scouting the Red Foxes
Marist finished the regular season with a 7-12 record but a 5-2 mark in the MAAC, claiming the No. 3 seed after tiebreakers. The Red Foxes last played on April 17 in their match with the Bobcats after an April 19 match vs. Hofstra was cancelled. Claire Schmitz leads the team with a 13-12 record in singles play while Chloe Lant, Elizabeth Brozovich and Caroline Lozo all have 11 wins this season. No. 1 singles players Karlene Pang went 5-12 and 4-3 in the MAAC. Lant and Pang were the Red Foxes top doubles team going 7-6 but Lozo and Ariel Shulman had the best MAAC record at 5-2 at No. 2 singles.
Busy End to the Season
The Bobcats finished the regular season with three matches in the final week, winning all three to extend their winning streak to five matches and six of their last seven since the spring break trip to Florida. Quinnipiac got conference wins against Fairfield and Siena before defeating ASA New York in the final match of the season.
Perfect Once Again
The Bobcats finished the regular season undefeated in the MAAC for the third consecutive season, boosting their record against MAAC opponents to 27-0 since joining the conference for the 2013-14 season.
Looking for a Record
The Bobcats 13 wins this season is just two wins shy of breaking the program record, which currently stands at 14 from last season's team and the 2010-11 team that both finished 14-9.
MAAC Player of the Week
Sophia Dzulynsky was named the MAAC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after going a perfect 6-0 in matches.
Soph-ora
Dzulynsky is riding a six match winning streak with her six-win week last week for the Bobcats. In singles play alone, Dzulynsky has won her last five matches and seven of her last eight. Dzulynsky has 35 wins this season, looking to tie her single-season career-high of 36 from both her sophomore and junior seasons. Dzulynsky's 35 wins this season are third on the team while she was a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 singles in MAAC play.
Among the Best
Rachel Horton is in the midst of one of the best single seasons in program history. She comes into the tournament with a 45-25 record, including 20-12 in singles and 25-13 in doubles. She is the first player since Julia Labarthe in 2011 to have 20 wins in both singles and doubles. Her 45 wins are the second most in a season in program history behind Jacqueline Raynor's 48 from last season. She has won seven of her last eight matches in both singles and doubles.
Cruise Control
Sitilia Rencheli has come on strong in the second half of the season after missing the first half of the season. Rencheli is 22-9, looking to surpass last season's win total of 23. Rencheli has won five straight singles matches and six of her last seven doubles matches.
Skip to My Lu
Jennifer Lu has blossomed with the spring for the Bobcats as she has really come on strong. Lu has only lost two singles matches since March 15, posting a 9-2 record, while dropping just one doubles match over that span to go 8-1. Overall, Lu is 33-19 in her first season as a Bobcat, recording the fourth most wins on the team.
Young and Wild and Free
Sydney Young is another Bobcat that has come on strong in the spring season after missing the fall. She is 17-12 this season, and has 98 wins in her career. Young is looking to become the 21st player in program history to win 100 matches with the Bobcats. Young is currently 8-4 in singles player and 9-8 in doubles, including a 9-2 record (4-1 MAAC) with Horton at No. 1 doubles.
Impressive Company
Proyfon Lohaphaisan is also putting together one of the best season by a freshman in program history as she has reached the 40-win mark with a 40-20 record. Lohaphaisan is 17-7 in singles and 23-13 in doubles. Lohaphaisan is the 17th player in program history to record a 40-win season while her 23 doubles wins are tied for 10th in program history. She has won four straight matches in each singles and doubles, also winning nine of her last 10 matches in each.
