
QU Women's Tennis Falls Just Short to Army West Point, 4-3

West Point, New York – The Quinnipiac women's tennis team nearly pulled off its biggest upset of the season on Friday, March 4 as the Bobcats fell to the Army West Point Black Knights, 4-3, at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut), Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) all picked up wins in singles for the Bobcats. Young's victory was her first of the season for the Bobcats while Horton picked up her team-leading 26th win of the season. Rencheli's victory continued her impressive spring season as she improved to 7-5.
Army West Point swept the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead against Quinnipiac. Eva Sung and Ruglie Valuniate defeated Horton and Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. Carolyn Pitman and Kirby Einck cruised at No. 2 doubles past Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Florida) and Rencheli, 6-1, while Nancy Porter and Genevieve McCormick had the toughest test at No. 3 doubles against Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) and Young but the Black Knights won, 6-4.
In singles play, it was a highly contested six matches and came right down to the wire. With the score knotted up 3-3, McCormick and Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) entered a third set but McCormick eventually pulled away with the win, 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Horton and Valuniate were one of the first matches complete as Horton picked up the 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Bobcats next two points came on three-set victories, first by Rencheli against Sung, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 followed by Young's first victory over Porter, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
The Black Knights also picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles early on in singles play. Pitman and Dzulynsky faced off in the top singles match with Pitman winning, 6-2, 6-2. Finishing just before that match, Einck yielded just one set to Oliphant, 6-0, 6-1.
Quinnipiac women's tennis returns to action on Tuesday, March 15 with two matches to open up their spring break trip to Florida where they will face Bucknell at 11:30 AM followed by a 7 PM match against Fairleigh Dickinson.
