
QU Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader with 5-2 Win over Bucknell, 6-1 Loss to Southern Mississippi

ORLANDO, Florida – Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) each won three of their for individual matches on Tuesday, March 15 in their doubleheader as the Quinnipiac men's tennis team defeated the Bucknell Bison, 5-2, to start the day before falling to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in the final match, 6-1.
With the split, Quinnipiac improves to 7-5 this season as they are 3-5 in the spring semester. Bucknell fell to 6-7 while Southern Mississippi improves to 11-7.
Kuwert's three victories now give him 80 in his career after one of his best days of the season. Kuwert won two matches in singles play and one in doubles to improve his season record to 14-12. Alper's three wins give him 30 already in the young season, breaking his single-season career-high of 28 from just a year ago. Alper is 30-14 in 44 matches this season.
Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) won a pair of doubles matches on Tuesday to reach the 90-win mark as he looks to become the seventh player in program history to join the 100-win club. Ezaka is 20-19 this season, with 10 wins in each singles and doubles.
Ezaka and Alper gave the Bobcats an early advantage against Bucknell as they won at No. 3 doubles against Daniel Wright and Ben Gerber, 6-4. Both matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles went to tiebreaker sets where they Bobcats clinched the doubles point. Kuwert and Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) clinched the point with a 7-6 (7) win over Nick Bybel and Bryan Adams at No. 1 doubles. Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) finished off the sweep with a 7-6 (4) win against Max Kane and Timber Erskine.
In singles play, Bybel evened up the scored for Bucknell with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Ezaka. It was all Quinnipiac from there as Kuwert reclaimed the lead for good with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Kane at No. 3 singles. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) continued his winning ways with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Wright. Roser picked up his second win of the match at No. 6 singles over Max McDonald, coming back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Alper picked up his second win after coming from behind as well against Gerber at No. 5 singles, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3. Adams closed out the match with a win for Bucknell against van Biezen at No. 4 singles, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2.

Roser and Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) reunited at No. 2 doubles but fell to Wen-Po Tseng and Chao-Yu Huang, 6-1. Shortly after, Southern Mississippi took the doubles point with a 6-2 win by Tarun Surat and Daniel Merker against Kuwert and Rozenstein, 6-2.
In singles play, Huang continued the winning for the Golden Eagles at No. 3 singles as he knocked off Rozenstein, 6-4, 6-1. In Zaretsky's first singles match of the day, he played well in the first set but eventually fell to Tseng, 7-5, 6-2. Ezaka forced a third set at No. 1 singles but came up just short against Surat, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5. At No. 5 singles, Alper fell in straight sets to Merker, 6-4, 6-3 that gave Southern Mississippi the win. Kuwert picked up one win at No. 4 singles for the Bobcats for their only point in the match, coming back to win 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 for the Bobcats. Haraguchi closed at the match with a loss at No. 6 singles against Teeradon Tortrakul, 6-3, 7-5.
