The Quinnipiac men's tennis team returns to action after a nearly three-week hiatus when they will travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area for a pair of matches this weekend. The Bobcats will head out to Media to face the St. Joseph's Hawks at the Springton Tennis Club at 8:15 PM on Friday, Feb. 26 before returning to Philadelphia to face the Temple Owls at the Legacy Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 6 PM.
All-Time Against the Hawks
The Bobcats are 0-1 all time against the St. Joseph's Hawks, losing their only matchup between each other on Feb. 7, 2014, 6-1. Luke Roser and Ryoma Haraguchi teamed up to win at doubles, 6-4, but the Bobcats could not take the doubles point, dropping the other two matches. Former Bobcat Eric Ambrosio picked up the only point with a singles win for the Bobcats.
Scouting the Hawks
This season, St. Joseph's is 3-1 with a 1-0 mark in A-10 play. After falling to Navy in the spring opener, the Hawks have rattled off three straight wins against conference foe Fordham, Lafayette and Saint Peter's.
All-time Against the Owls
This weekend will be the first ever matchup between the Bobcats and the Owls.
Scouting the Owls
Temple comes into the weekend with a 10-1 record this season and have won eight straight matches. The Owls have faced a few familiar opponents to the Bobcats, including Rider, Wagner and UConn. Uladzimir Dorash leads the team with 19 wins this season while Artem Kapshuk has 15 wins, going 15-3 on the young season. Temple has dropped just 26 matches in singles play and only eight in doubles play all season long.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats nearly upset the Brown Bears in their second match of the spring season on Feb. 6. After taking the doubles point with wins from the duos of Jonas Kuwert and Willem van Biezen, as well as Kei Ezaka and Kyle Alper. Freddie Zaretsky and Julian Rozenstein won singles matches for the Bobcats but Brown came away with four points in singles to win the match, 4-3.
Jonas Brothers
Jonas Kuwert comes into the weekend with 75 career victories after a doubles win against Brown. Kuwert has won nine matches this season including four in doubles play. Kuwert won 31 matches just a season ago for the Bobcats.
In a Van Down by the River
Willem van Biezen is in the midst of another incredible season, picking up 23 wins to move up to 52 wins in his career. In the fall, van Biezen tied his career-high with 13 singles victories while his 10 doubles wins, including against Brown, are six shy of tying his career high.
Major Kei
Kei Ezaka picked up his 16th win of the season against Brown, including his seventh in doubles play, as the junior continues his impressive Quinnipiac career. Ezaka has 86 victories in his career, which is good for the second most on the active roster behind Luke Roser's 97 wins.
Kyle XY
Since pairing up with Ezaka, Alper has been winning doubles matches at a furious pace, winning 11 this season to more than double his freshman year total. Alper already has 23 wins this season, just five shy of tying his entire freshman season in which he won 28 matches.
The Mystery Machine
The freshman phenom for the Bobcats, Freddie Zaretsky continues to get the job done with 21 wins in his first collegiate season. Zaretsky picked up his 10th singles win of the season against the Bears, giving him double-digit wins in singles and doubles in his first season with the Bobcats.
Scuba Steve
Julian Rozenstein has been a winning machine since coming to Quinnipiac as a freshman last season. Last season he won 34 matches and this season has already picked up 18 wins, going 18-9. Rozenstein continues his dominance in singles action, going 12-5 this season with 32 victories in singles play and 52 overall.
Returning Home
The Bobcats will return home for their first home match of the spring season on Saturday, March 5 against the Boston University Terriers at 6:30 PM. The match will be played on the indoor courts at the North Haven Health and Racquet Center in the Bobcats' final match before their annual spring break trip to Orlando, Florida.
