
QU Women's Tennis Set for Three Dual Matches This Week

CAUTION: BUSY WEEK AHEAD
For the first time in the 2015-16 season, the Quinnipiac women's tennis team will compete in dual matches with four on the docket this week. The Bobcats will host the non-conference opponents UConn on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 3 P.M. and Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 3 P.M. before hitting the road this weekend for MAAC opponent Rider on Sunday, Oct. 11.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
UConn is coming off its first of two dual matches this fall, picking up a victory of the UMass Minutewomen. After losing the doubles point by getting swept, the Huskies stormed back to win five of the six singles matches to take the match win, 5-2. UConn has seen great success this season, posting 42 wins alone at the West Point Invite, led by Srna Stosljevic who won the Flight 1 singles title and Flight "A" doubles title with Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph. Last season, the Bobcats lost a heartbreaker to the Huskies, 4-3.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Sacred Heart is also coming off its first dual match of the season as they blanked Monmouth in the dual match season opener, 7-0 on Sept. 29. In that sweep, the closest match came at No. 4 singles, with Taylor Gurda defeating Chioma Gabriel, 6-4, 7-5. The Pioneers and Bobcats have seen each other every tournament this weekend, between the Sacred Heart Doubles Festival, Quinnipiac Invitational and West Point Invite. At the West Point Invite, Olivia Podsiebierski and Taylor Gurda reached the Flight "B" doubles semifinals. Last season, the Bobcats won 5-2 over the Pioneers.
SCOUTING THE BRONCS
The Broncs are 0-3 (0-1 MAAC) heading into this week's action, with two conference matchups on tap before facing the Bobcats on Sunday, Oct. 11. In the first three dual matches, the Broncs have won just two individual matches with Vanessa Canda picking up a win over Wagner's Samantha Hodges, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in singles, and Canda and Caitlin Gardner winning in doubles over Marist's Karly Pang and Claire Schmitz 7-6 (4). At the Lehigh Invitational, the Broncs won the doubles point against Monmouth and Montana Morris won the only singles match.
WEST POINT INVITE RECAP
Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) led the Bobcats at the West Point Invite from Sept. 25-27, reaching the Flight "B" singles consolation championship match as well as the Flight "A" doubles semifinals with Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California). Horton won two matches in both singles and doubles in her successful showing at the West Point Invite. Lohaphaisan also picked up a pair of wins for the Bobcats in each singles and doubles. Freshmen Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) and Adrian Young (Orange Village, Ohio) won two doubles matches, including a main draw win in the first round and Mircea picked up a main draw win in singles as the No. 8 seed in the Third Singles bracket.
ARE YOU READY TO DUAL?
Last season, the Quinnipiac women's tennis team went 14-9 in dual matches, including trips to the MAAC Tournament and NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. The Bobcats were a perfect 10-0 in conference play and picked up four non-conference victories against Hartford, Sacred Heart, Hampton and St. Bonaventure.
FRESHMAN LEADER
With four wins at the West Point Invite, Lohaphaisan maintains her team lead in wins with 12, posting an overall record of 12-6, including 9-4 in doubles play with Horton. Lohaphaisan has won at least three matches in every tournament leading into the first week of dual match play.
HOW YOU DOIN'
Horton has kept up her impressive pace of winning this season as she approaches some career-highs so early in the season. Horton has won nine doubles matches already, closing in on her career-high of 14 set during her freshman season of 2013-14. She also surpassed the 50 win mark at the West Point Invite, finishing with a career record of 52-25.
ALEX AND ANI
Mircea put up a good showing at the West Point Invitational after picking up the No. 8 seed in the Third Singles bracket. Mircea was the only Bobcat to win a singles and doubles match in the main draw of the competition. She is now third on the team in wins with eight, including a 6-4 record in doubles play this season.
YOUNG THE GIANT
Adrian Young picked up a main draw doubles win with Mircea at the West Point Invite while also picking up a consolation win in the final day of competition. The two have combined to go 5-3 in doubles competition, the second-best doubles record by a pair on the team. In the Bobcats limited singles matches so far, Young is also up there in wins, tied for second on the team with two.
KEEP IT GOING
The Bobcats are riding a three-match regular season winning streak, dating back to last season when they won the final three matches of the season against Marist, Saint Peter's and Monmouth. Adding to the streak, the Bobcats won the matches with impressive 5-2, 7-0, and 7-0 wins, respectively. The Bobcats haven't dropped an individual regular season match since the 5-2 win over Marist.
AFTER THE STRETCH
Quinnipiac women's tennis will continue its dual matches after this week with two more against Hartford on Oct. 16 and MAAC opponent Saint Peter's on Oct. 17 before beginning the ITA Regionals in Hanover, New Hampshire on Oct. 22 for the final competition of the fall season.
