Groenewold Selected to USA Hockey World Junior Summer Showcase

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Rising sophomore defenseman Elliott Groenewold will attend the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase, held this year from July 25 to August 2 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
He is amongst 14 defensemen and 42 players overall invited by USA Hockey to the competition that will also include players from Canada, Finland and Sweden, The week-long showcase serves as an evaluation for athletes seeking to make their respective national teams for the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship, held from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6 in Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
The Springfield, Vt., native played in every game for the Bobcats during his first season in Hamden, scoring four goals and dishing eight assists. He added a pair of game-winning goals on the year, scoring his first collegiate goal against Holy Cross in a 3-0 victory and also adding the winner at Brown in a 3-2 win on Nov. 15.
The defenseman was also a stalwart defensively, recording a blocked shot in 35 of 38 appearances, including 27 straight contests, which is the longest streak by anyone in the country.
The 19-year-old is a fourth-round draft pick of the Boston Bruins and will be joining fellow B's picks James Hagens and Will Moore on the ice.

Minnesota leads the way with 14 players, followed by California (5), Illinois (5), New York (4), Michigan (3), Massachusetts (2), Pennsylvania (2), Vermont (2), Alaska (1), Missouri (1), Ohio (1), Texas (1) and Wisconsin (1) … All but three of the 42 invited players have been drafted by NHL teams, including nine first-round picks, 13 second-round selections and four players chosen in the third round. A total of 23 different NHL teams are represented among the drafted players with the LA Kings and New York Islanders leading the way with four selections each … John Vanbiesbrouck (Detroit, Mich./USA Hockey) is the general manager of the U.S. National Junior Team for the eighth straight year while Bob Motzko (Austin, Minn./University of Minnesota) is back as head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team for the third time … The U.S. has won the last two gold medals in the World Juniors and has medaled in eight of the last 10 IIHF World Junior Championships, its best medal stretch ever.
