Bobcats Split Doubleheader, Drop Series to Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Quinnipiac defeated Fairfield in the first game of the doubleheader, 11-5, to even the series, but Fairfield walked off the Bobcats in the tenth inning of the second game to win the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
The Bobcats got on the board first as Christian Smith doubled home Kyle Garbowski and CJ Willis to give Quinnipiac an early 2-0 advantage.
Quinnipiac doubled its lead in the fourth inning as Sean McCulloch reached on an error by the shortstop and Christian Smith and Cole Constable came in to score.
In the fifth inning, Quinnipiac put up a five-spot to take a 9-0 lead. Kyle Garbowski got the scoring started as he doubled home Johnny Knox to make it 5-0 Bobcats. As the next batter, CJ Willis singled up the middle and Garbowski scampered home with QU's sixth run of the game. After Fairfield made a pitching change, Sebastian Mueller welcomed him to the game with a two-run blast over the left-field wall. After a flyout made it two outs in the inning, it was Alex Irizarry's turn to leave the yard, giving the Bobcats a nine-run advantage.
After Fairfield got on the board in their half of the fifth inning, Quinnipiac tacked on more runs in the seventh. Alex Irizarry added to his home run with an RBI double to right-center field to score Sebastian Mueller. Sean McCulloch made it 11-1 with a sacrifice fly, scoring Christian Smith.
Fairfield would hang around as they plated four runs in the ninth inning, but Ryan O'Connell would get the final out to take the first game of the doubleheader.
Game Two
After three scoreless innings, Fairfield got on the board first with a solo home run in their half of the fourth inning.
The Bobcats were held off the scoreboard until Alex Irizarry stepped up in the seventh inning and hit his second home run of the day to knot the game up at one.
This game would need extra innings as they were knotted at one through nine innings. After Fairfield didn't allow the Bobcats to score in the tenth inning, the Stags walked it off in their half of the inning to win the game 2-1.

- Alex Irizarry drove in three runs for the Bobcats in the doubleheader. Irizarry notched two in the first game and one in the second.
- Irizarry homered in both games of the doubleheader, giving him 12 on the year and tying him with Sebastian Mueller for the team lead.
- Christian Smith went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader, picking up four hits in the opening game.
- Smith recorded two RBIs in the first game, recording them on his two-run double to open the game.
- CJ Willis picked up three hits in game one and one hit in the second game to push his batting average to .344, which is second on the team.
- Kyle Garbowski notched three hits to power past the Stags in game one of the doubleheader.
- Knox hit his sixth home run of the season with his two-run blast in the eighth inning.
