Diaz and Giovagnoni Post Double-Doubles in Loss vs. Furman

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Quinnipiac women's volleyball opened its season on Friday morning, falling short in the opener against Furman, 3-2, at the Hokie Invitational inside of Cassell Coliseum.
Aryanah Diaz and Ginevera Giovagnoni led the Bobcats with a double-double apiece, as Damla Gunes added 50 assists and Fa'ave Kimsel Moe contributed 28 digs.
With the loss, Quinnipiac opens the 2023 campaign at 0-1, while Furman improves to 1-0 to begin its season.

SET ONE (25-22, Quinnipiac)
After falling behind 6-4 early in the set, the Bobcats went on a 6-0 run, capped by a kill from Alexandra Tennon to take a 10-6 lead! Furman battled back, cutting Quinnipiac's lead to 13-12 before the Bobcats secured back-to-back points on a kill from Ginevra Giovagnoni and a Furman attack error to take a three-point lead into the media timeout.
The Bobcats were able to extend the lead to 21-16 out of the break to force Furman to use a timeout. Out of the break, the Paladins went on a 3-1 run to force a QU timeout. However, the Bobcats held on for the eventual 25-22 set victory.
SET TWO (23-25)
Quinnipiac stayed hot in the second set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead before Furman called timeout. The Paladins did not go away, battling back to knot the set at 14-14. The two sides remained even through the set, trading points to a 22-22 tie before Furman took the set 25-23.
SET THREE (25-23)
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 9-4 lead behind four kills from Aryanah Diaz to force a Furman timeout. Quinnipiac's lead once reached as much as 17-7 before Furman fought back to tie the set at 23-23. However, a kill from Tennon and a Furman attack error secured the set victory for QU.
SET FOUR (24-26)
After falling behind 6-3 in the set, Quinnipiac responded with an 8-4 run to take an 11-10 lead in the frame. The two sides traded points until Furman crept ahead 15-13 at the media timeout. Out of the break, Diaz scored a kill, followed by back-to-back kills from Giovagnoni to take a 17-15 lead in the frame to force a timeout from the Paladins.
The two sides traded points out of the timeout to a 23-23 tie before Quinnipiac called a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Paladins took three of the next four points to secure the set victory.
SET FIVE (14-16)
The two sides exchanged points to a 5-5 tie before Quinnipiac took the next three points to move ahead 8-5, forcing a Furman timeout. The two sides went back and forth in the set until Furman fought back to cut the QU lead to 14-13 to force a QU timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Paladins tallied three straight points to steal the set and match victory.

● Aryanah Diaz tallied 21 kills and 11 digs for a double-double
● Diaz added six assists and four service aces as well
● Ginevra Giovagnoni added 19 kills and 18 digs for a double-double of her own
● Damla Gunes contributed 50 assists
● Gunes has recorded 50 or more assists in three matches in her collegiate career
● Fa'avae Kimsel Moe led Quinnipiac with 28 digs
