Softball Bounces Back in Game Two, Splits NCAT Doubleheader

GREENSBORO, S.C.—The Quinnipiac softball team split their doubleheader against North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, March 14 in Greensboro, S.C. The Bobcats lost the first matchup 6-2 to the Lady Aggies before returning the favor by taking game two, 9-4. Sydney Horan pitched seven innings in the second game, allowing only eight hits and striking out six.

SCORING SUMMARY
Game one:
First Inning-
- The Lady Aggies took the lead in the first, going up 1-0 on a double to right center from A. Estrada, followed by a single down the right field line by S. Baldwin to bring Estrada home.
Third Inning-
- The Bobcats evened the score at one after M. Fogg advanced to second on a fielder's choice. M. Fogg scored on a single to right from Apatiga.
- The Lady Aggies regained a 2-1 lead when J. Bennett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Fourth Inning-
- With S. Baldwin on third J. Deese singled through the left side to bring Baldwin home.
- With D. Patmon on second and Deese on first, M. Ellis reached on a throwing error and advanced on the throw to put Deese on third who ultimately scored, brought Patmon across home plate, and the score, 5-1 in favor of the Lady Aggies.
- NCAT added another to the board when Ellis scored on a single by L. Langley.
Seventh Inning-
- The final scoring play of game one came with Palmisano on second. M. Fogg singled up the middle to advance Palmisano to third before she scored on an error by center field, bringing the final score to 6-2 Lady Aggies.
Game two:
First Inning-
- Quinnipiac came out strong in the first inning, with the bases loaded after Natalia Apatiga walked, Julia Woeste struck out swinging to bring Bridget Nasir to the plate. Nasir doubled to left center to score Mary Fogg and Brooke Hilliard with Apatiga ready on third. A flyout to center from Amanda Engel advanced Nasir into a scoring position and gave Apatiga the chance to run home. The score was 3-0 Bobcats after the top of the first.
- The Lady Aggies cut the Bobcats lead by one in the bottom of the first frame, when D. Patmon tripled and then scored on a single to shortstop from J. Deese.
Third Inning-
- QU added to their lead in the third thanks to Bridget Nasir's sacrifice play. Nasir was caught stealing at second which gave Natalia Apatiga the time to cross Homeplate and extend the Bobcats lead.
Fourth Inning-
- Another fruitful inning for the Bobcats came in the fourth as Sofia Vega's double to right center brought in Serena Fogg.
- Vega stayed on second as Mary Fogg reached on a fielding error by the Lady Aggies. Another fielding error pushed Vega home, advanced M. Fogg to third, and put the Bobcats up 6-1.
Fifth Inning-
- The Lady Aggies scored their second run of the game off a homerun from K. Taylor to right field.
Sixth Inning-
- QU extended their lead to 7-2 over the Lady Aggies in the sixth. Serena Fogg walked on the first at bat, Vega struck out swinging to put Mary Fogg up to bat. M. Fogg reached on a fielding error at second and advanced her sister to second. M. Fogg advanced to second on a wild pitch and put S. Fogg in scoring position at third. Hilliard's walk loaded the bases with Bobcats and another wild pitch by the Lady Aggies scored S. Fogg. A flyout to right ended the inning and limited the Bobcats to one run and two left on base.
- The Lady Aggies were not done battling yet, as NCAT scored their second homerun of the night, this time from J. Barkhimer to bring in two runs and cut the Bobcats lead in half. The score was 7-4 heading in to the seventh inning.
Seventh Inning-
- With the bases loaded from three walks, Nasir scored on a flyout from Hannah Davis. S. Fogg remained on first while Engel advanced to third.
- Engel and S. Fogg scored on the next play as the Lady Aggies threw a wild pitch, giving both student-athletes time and space to cross home and bringing the score to 9-4 Bobcats.
NOTES:
- Bridget Nasir recorded two RBI's, one hit, one run and one double through three at bats.
- Hannah Davis and Sofia Vega each had an RBI.
- Vega had four at bats, one run, one hit, and one double.
- Natalia Apatiga had two runs, one hit, and one double through three at bats.
- Serena Fogg had two runs, one hit, and one double through two at bats.
- Sydney Horan had six strikeouts and an ERA of 4.0.
