BOSTON, Mass. - For the first time in program history, the Quinnipiac indoor track & field team won the New England Championships on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston.
"My first year as a head coach, we scored 6 points at this meet," head coach Carolyn Martin said. "I couldn't imagine that our team would become the TEAM we are today. We had a tremendous coaching staff - even before I took over - that has taught us to coach with heart. That is exactly how our team ran today, with heart! We were not the top seed going into this meet but our team worked so hard for each other and when they saw the possibility was there, they wanted it more for each other and for us. I am so proud of these ladies!"
Three Bobcats won individual events for the team, and eight Bobcats made it to the podium. Quinnipiac swept the relay races, winning the 4x400m, 4x800m and distance medley relay. Quinnipiac recorded 134 points as a team. UMass finsihed in second place with 127.5 points, and Holy Cross took third place with 112 points.
"In my five years of competing for QU, it's definitely been a journey coming so close to winning, especially at the MAAC Championships two years ago," said graduate student Britney Del Mundo. "This meet gave me the same chills and excitement I remember having at MAACs, but winning was just the cherry on top. I think it gave me and the team the confidence and reassurance needed that our talent is there and that our hard work pays off. Meets like this is what makes track and field fun, and I'm so lucky to be competing with such an amazing and competitive group of women with the support of our coaches. Despite the obstacles, even when the stats are against us, we persevered and won which is something truly special."
