HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's rugby returns to the field on Saturday afternoon, playing host to Sacred Heart to continue NIRA action in Hamden.
LAST TIME OUT: W at Princeton
- Quinnipiac women's rugby cruised to a road win, 78-5, on Saturday morning vs. Princeton.
- Kat Storey, Cassidy Dugdale and Alexandra Erdolino led the way for the Bobcats, as each reached the try zone twice in the victory. QU moves to 2-3 with the win.
- Sacred Heart is 1-2-1 so far this year. The Pioneers fell at Harvard (27-5) their most recent time out on Sept. 30.
- Sacred Heart defeated Princeton to begin the fall season back on Sept. 3. They then played to a 24-24 tie vs. Brown, and dropped matches to both Dartmouth and Harvard.
- The Bobcats defeated SHU 48-24 last year in Fairfield (9/3/2021).
- Quinnipiac took a preseason trip to Nova Scotia in late August, playing in an exhibition vs. X-Women Rugby on Halifax Wanderers Grounds.
- The preseason contest took place on Saturday, Aug. 27, and was followed by an international match between Team Canada and Whales.
- "This opportunity to travel and compete internationally is ideal for our group's energy and optimism heading into the regular season," Quinnipiac Head Coach Becky Carlson said. "The chance to be the curtain-raiser on an international stage says a lot about Quinnipiac as an NCAA program, and our demand to be considered a top NCAA contender. This match will not only give us a chance to chip away at some of the kinds early on, but it will also show future NCAA rugby student-athletes what kinds of opportunities this experience can lead to."
- Quinnipiac went 3-4 last season, winning each of their last two games in late October to finish the fall season.
- The Bobcats three victories all came on the road – against Sacred Heart (Sept. 3), vs. Northeastern (Oct. 23) and vs. Mount St. Mary's (Oct. 30). QU then went 3-2 in five games during the Brown 7's in April.
- Carlson enters her 12th season at the helm of the women's rugby program in 2022-23, leading the transition from a new varsity program into a three-time national champion. Carlson has been a key advocate for women's NCAA rugby and equality in athletics for over a decade.
- As the original head coach of the Quinnipiac women's rugby team added in 2011, Carlson boasts back-to-back-to-back Division I NIRA national championship titles (2015, 2016 and 2017).
