HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac men's tennis team faces a big conference matchup when it hosts Marist in a battle of MAAC unbeatens on Tuesday at noon at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club.
LAST MATCH (BRYANT 7, QUINNIPIAC 0)
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team fought some close battles in singles, but ended up on the short end of a 7-0 defeat at Bryant on Sunday at Fore Courts, in a tune-up for a couple of big MAAC matches this week. The Bobcats did win one of the three doubles matches, as sophomore Axel Stern and freshman Hielke Moore took a 6-4 decision at No. 2. Bryant, though, was able to take the wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn the 1-0 advantage heading into singles. The Bobcats were right in many of their singles matches, despite dropping the decisions on all six courts.. Senior Kyle Alper fell in three sets at No. 2 after taking the first set. Sophomore Patrick Cachapero went to two tiebreakers at No. 3, falling 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), while senior Julian Rozenstein fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Stern and Moore both regrouped after 6-2 losses in the first set to push the second sets past regulation before falling 7-5 at No. 4 and No. 5.
BOBCATS MOVE TO 2-0 IN MAAC
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team fought off a tough battle from Niagara early in singles to come away with a 6-1 win over the Purple Eagles on March 24 at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club, improving to 2-0 in the MAAC. Senior Julian Rozenstein and sophomore Patrick Cachapero were able to take three-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Axel Stern earned the clincher at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
ROZENSTEIN NAMED MAAC PLAYER OF WEEK...
Senior Julian Rozenstein had a 4-0 weekend to help the Bobcats pick up a pair of home wins, knocking off Niagara on Saturday, March 24 to improve to 2-0 in the MAAC, and then defeating a Fordham team on Sunday, March 25 that came in with an 11-4 record, which earned him the MAAC Player of the Week honor on March 28. Rozenstein played at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in both matches, and picked up two doubles wins with two different partners (junior Freddie Zaretsky on Saturday and sophomore Patrick Cachapero on Sunday).
...ONE WEEK AFTER MOORE
Freshman Hielke Moore was named the MAAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week on March 21, following his performance at the IMG Academy on Quinnipiac's spring break trip to Florida. Moore was 4-2 on the week over three matches, including a singles-doubles sweep against Butler to provide Quinnipiac with its lone point. Moore also had a three-set win in singles against Colgate to tie the match 3-3, and picked up a doubles win against Connecticut.
ROZENSTEIN STARTS STRONG
Julian Rozenstein started his senior campaign in September with a win in the Flight "A" singles bracket at the UConn Invitational. Rozenstein, who went over 100 career victories as a junior last season, has been playing at No. 1 singles and doubles all season, and currently leads the Bobcats in singles wins (12), doubles wins (11) and total wins (23).
NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED
Freshman Hielke Moore started his collegiate career with a four-win weekend at the UConn Invitational as he captured the Flight "C" Singles championship 6-0, 6-4. He now has 10 singles wins on the year (10-7) and ranks first on the Bobcats in overall winning percentage at 18-11 (10-7 singles, 8-4 doubles).
EARLY BATTLE FOR FIRST
Quinnipiac and Marist are two of the four teams in MAAC play that are still unbeaten. The Bobcats and Red Foxes are tied for first at 2-0, while defending champion Monmouth sits at 1-0. The top four teams qualify for the MAAC Tournament, which will be held on April 28-29.
LAST YEAR vs. MARIST
The Bobcats dropped a close 4-3 decision on the road to Marist during the regular season, despite a singles-doubles sweep from current senior Julian Rozenstein, who won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles and teamed with current junior Freddie Zaretsky for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Current senior Kyle Alper also swept both events, earning a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles and teaming with graduated senior Kei Ezaka for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles, which helped Ezaka set a program record with the 138th win of his career.
