CUMBERLAND, R.I. — The Quinnipiac men's tennis team fought some close battles in singles, but ended up on the short end of a 7-0 defeat at Bryant on Sunday at Fore Courts, in a tune-up for a couple of big MAAC matches this week.
The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Bobcats, who fall to 5-8 after last being in action with two home matches on March 24-25 over Niagara and Fordham. Bryant improves to 10-15 with the win.
The Bobcats did win one of the three doubles matches, as sophomore Axel Stern and freshman Hielke Moore took a 6-4 decision at No. 2. Bryant, though, was able to take the wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn the 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Despite the 7-0 final score, the Bobcats were in many of their singles matches on the afternoon. Senior Kyle Alper fell in three sets at No. 2 after taking the first set. Sophomore Patrick Cachapero went to two tiebreakers at No. 3, falling 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), while senior Julian Rozenstein fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreaker). Stern and Moore both regrouped after 6-2 losses in the first set to push the second sets past regulation before falling 7-5.
Quinnipiac will need to move on quickly from the defeat, as it hosts Marist on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club and then heads to Siena on Friday. The Bobcats come into the week 2-0 in MAAC play and will look to solidify their place in the top four to earn a bid to the MAAC Tournament later this month.
