ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Junior Luciana Tobia-Palza finished the first round of the Navy Spring Invitational in a tie for third place (out of 58 competitors) in frigid conditions that led to high scores from the entire field.
Tobia-Palza was one of six golfers to tie for third place with an 80, as only two competitors in the entire field finished in the 70s. Julie Luo of Yale holds a six-shot lead for first place with a 73, while Lindsay Dodovich of Bucknell was the only other golfer to break 80, finishing her 18 holes with a 79.
Junior Julia Kemmling was tied for 19th overall with an 84, while freshman Queenie Lai and sophomore Alexandra Sazhin were both tied for 24th with an 85.
Yale has a sizable lead in the team competition after the first day with a 316, but Towson (333), Quinnipiac (334) and host Navy (334) are in a tight battle for second. The Bobcats have finished in the top five in each of their last four tournaments, including a fourth-place showing in their last outing at the Babs Steffens Hatter Invitational, hosted by Stetson.
The second day of the Navy Invitational will take place on either Saturday or Sunday, depending on course conditions. Due to the potential threat of inclement weather, the decision on playing round two on Saturday will be determined Saturday morning. If the course is playable, round two will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. If the course is not playable, the tournament will resume on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with the final round.
