HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's tennis team plays a home match against Marist at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m., with the winner taking over sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
QUINNIPIAC BOBCATS (11-6, 5-0 MAAC) vs.
MARIST RED FOXES (7-7, 4-0 MAAC)
Time: Sunday, April 15, 6:30 p.m.
Location: North Haven Health and Racquet Club - North Haven, Conn.
BATTLE OF MAAC UNBEATENS
Sunday night's match with Marist will pit 5-0 Quinnipiac and 4-0 Marist in a battle for first place among the last two teams that are unbeaten in conference play. Quinnipiac has already clinched a spot in the MAAC Tournament on April 28-29 (the top four teams qualify), while Marist is on the cusp of qualifying as well.
LAST MATCH (QUINNIPIAC 6, SIENA 1)
Quinnipiac bounced back after dropping the doubles point to sweep through singles without losing a set on its way to a 6-1 road win over Siena on Friday at Tri-Cities in Latham. Freshman Dominique Vasile and junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan earned singles-doubles sweeps by combining for a win at No. 2 doubles and then earning singles victories at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.
MILESTONES REACHED
Juniors Proyfon Lohaphaisan and Jennifer Lu both went into the Siena match on Friday with 99 career wins, and both managed to join the century club in Quinnipiac's 6-1 win. Lohaphaisan reached the milestone in doubles and added win No. 101 in singles. Lu fell in her match at No. 1 doubles, but reached the milestone on her second try with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles.
BOBCATS STRETCH MAAC STREAK TO 43
Quinnipiac's last match against Siena was one which had the potential to end its long winning streak against MAAC opponents. Since joining the league in 2013-14, Quinnipiac has never lost to a MAAC opponent, entering the Siena match with 42 straight wins (34-0 regular season, 8-0 in the tournament). However, the Saints played the Bobcats very tough in the 2017 MAAC Championship (Quinnipiac won 4-2, with the final two singles matches going to three sets before the Bobcats clinched) and had much of their team back to make a run at Quinnipiac's title. Siena won the doubles point to put some pressure on the Bobcats, but they stepped up to sweep singles and improved to 43-0 all-time in the MAAC.
VASILE EARNS SECOND MAAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR...
Freshman Dominique Vasile was named the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season on Wednesday, March 28, after a singles-doubles sweep in a MAAC win over Niagara. She also earned the honor on Wednesday, Feb. 21, after her strong performance against the Binghamton Bearcats. Vasile earned wins in No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, picking up a convincing straight-set win in singles (6-4, 6-2).
... AND LOHAPHAISAN EARNS ONE TOO
Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan earned the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on March 21, following her strong performance on the Bobcats' Spring Break trip to the IMG Academy in Florida. After a pair of tough defeats against Navy on the first day of Quinnipiac's trip, Lohaphaisan came back to win four matches in one day as the Bobcats took 5-2 wins over Colgate and Bryant. Her Bryant sweep included an 8-6 win in the doubles tiebreaker, and an 11-9 win in a third-set singles tiebreaker.
PICKED TO WIN AGAIN
Quinnipiac lost a deep senior class from last year's MAAC Championship team, including its No. 1 (Sitilia Rencheli), No. 3 (Rachel Horton) and No. 4 (Sydney Young) singles players. However, the league's coaches still showed their respect for what the Bobcats have accomplished, as Quinnipiac was still the unanimous favorites to win the 2017-18 MAAC Championship in the league's preseason poll.
LOOKING FRESH
A big reason why the Bobcats were still picked by the league coaches to win the MAAC again despite losing a big senior class last year is that they brought in an impressive freshman class to help fill the void left behind by last year's graduates. So far, the rookies have not disappointed, as the team's freshmen have combined for 49 singles wins, led by 13 from Dominique Vasile, who has settled into the No. 1 singles spot, and 12 from CProyfon Lohaphaisan
BOBCAT WIN LEADERS
