BOBCATS CLOSE FLORIDA TRIP WITH TWO DRAMATIC WINS
Quinnipiac took a pair of dramatic 5-2 wins over Colgate and Bryant on its final day of its Spring Break trip to the IMG Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida on Thursday. In its first match against Colgate, Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan and freshman Courtney Nash both battled back after dropping their first sets to win three-setters and give the Bobcats the 5-2 win. Against Bryant, the Bobcats won tiebreakers at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to squeak out the doubles point by the narrowest of margins, and then pulled out the 5-2 win in a match where all five courts that were played to completion went to three sets. Lohaphaisan and freshman Stephanie Yanosov each finished the day with 4-0 records.
LOHAPHAISAN EARNS MAAC PLAYER OF WEEK HONOR...
Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan earned the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday following her strong performance on the Bobcats' Spring Break trip to the IMG Academy in Florida last week. After a pair of tough defeats against Navy on the first day of Quinnipiac's trip on Tuesday, Lohaphaisan came back to win four matches in one day as the Bobcats took 5-2 wins over Colgate and Bryant. Her Bryant sweep included an 8-6 win in the doubles tiebreaker, and an 11-9 win in a third-set singles tiebreaker.
...AS DOES VASILE
Freshman Dominique Vasile was named the MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday, Feb. 21, after her strong performance against the Binghamton Bearcats. Vasile earned wins in No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, picking up a convincing straight-set win in singles (6-4, 6-2) and a 6-4 win in doubles with Proyfon Lohaphaisan.
THE BIG 4-0
Quinnipiac has won the last four MAAC Championships since joining the league in the 2013-14 season. The Bobcats have still never lost a MAAC match, going a combined 40-0 in the last four years in both the regular season (32-0) and postseason (8-0). The Bobcats stretched their win streak against MAAC foes to 40 with a 7-0 win over Saint Peter's in the fall.
PICKED TO WIN AGAIN
Quinnipiac lost a deep senior class from last year's MAAC Championship team, including its No. 1 (Sitilia Rencheli), No. 3 (Rachel Horton) and No. 4 (Sydney Young) singles players. However, the league's coaches still showed their respect for what the Bobcats have accomplished, as Quinnipiac was still the unanimous favorites to win the 2017-18 MAAC Championship in the league's preseason poll.
LOOKING FRESH
A big reason why the Bobcats were still picked to win the MAAC is that they brought in an impressive freshman class to help fill the void left behind by last year's graduating class. So far, the rookies have not disappointed, as the team's freshmen have combined for 37 singles wins, led by nine apiece from Dominique Vasile, who has frequently played at No. 1 singles, and Courtney Nash.
BOBCAT WIN LEADERS
Junior Proyfon Lohaphaisan currently leads all Bobcats with 13 singles wins so far this season, one ahead of classmate Jennifer Lu with 12. Lu. meanwhile, leads the Bobcats in doubles wins (10) and overall wins (22).
LU COMPETES IN ITA MASTERS
In September, junior Jennifer Lu earned an invitation to compete in the 2017 Oracle/ ITA Masters at the Malibu Racquet Club in Malibu, California. Her tip earned her the chance to compete against the top -ranked player in the country, Ena Shibahara of UCLA, who took the match by a 6-1, 6-1 final.
A DOUBLY GOOD WIN
Junior Jennifer Lu and sophomore Layla Rodriguez participated in the Hofstra Invitational in doubles in the fall, reaching the finals. The duo combined for three wins over the weekend, including two wins in the Doubles A bracket to advance to the finals. One of their victories came over Fordham's Carina Ma and Estelle Wong, 7-6 (8-3). Ma and Wong were undefeated to start the 2017-18 season until being defeated by Lu and Rodriguez.
CAPTAINS OF THE SHIP
Three-time MAAC Coach of the Year, Paula Miller, announced Proyfon Lohaphaisan and Amy Zammarieh as the captains of the Quinnipiac women's tennis team for 2018.
LAST YEAR vs. NIAGARA
