HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac men's tennis team cruised to a 5-2 victory over former NEC rival Sacred Heart, on its spring home opener on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 8-5 (3-0 MAAC) on the season, while Sacred Heart falls to 2-11.
Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey), Axel Stern (Tustin, California), Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) all earned two victories apiece in the contest.
Ezaka's two wins now gives him 136 wins for his career, which is second all-time in program history and one win away from tying the program record of 137 wins held by John Hughes '10.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match, where Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) and Ezaka teamed up to defeat Franciso Del Valle Diaz and Matthew Suprenant, 6-1. The win was the duo's fourth straight, which is the longest active doubles win-streak on team.
Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) and Stern took the court in the No. 2 doubles match against Bryan Einstoss and Seiji Hosokowa, defeating the Sacred Heart duo, 6-3. The win was the duo's third straight and 11th of the season, which is tops on the team. The win also clinched the doubles point for the Bobcats, securing a 1-0 lead before singles play. Rozenstein and Zaretsky secured the doubles sweep after they defeated Derek Chapman and Cory Seltman, 6-4.
Rozenstein took to the court to start singles play in the No. 3 match against Chapman, sweeping the Pioneer, 6-1 and 6-0 to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead. Stern gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead after he defeated Diaz in the No. 5 match in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. Zaretsky secured the Quinnipiac win after he defeated Hosokowa in straight sets, 7-6 (1) and 6-1.
Ezaka then took the court in the No. 1 singles match against Seltman, coasting past him in straight sets, 6-1 and 7-6 (0). The win was No. 136 for his career, which is second all-time to John Hughes' program-record of 137 wins. Currently, Ezaka has 68 singles wins, which is second all-time and 68 doubles wins, which is third all-time in program history. Ezaka will have the chance to tie and possibly set a new program-record in wins in Sunday's matches against Binghamton University and Army.
The day concluded with the No. 6 and No. 4 singles matches. Jackson Koke (Calgary, Alberta) fell to Chris Sause in three sets, 6-1, 4-6 and 10-7, then Alper fell to Einstoss in three sets as well, 6-2, 3-6 and 10-3.
