NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had six goals, but it wasn't quite enough as the Bellarmine men's lacrosse team spoiled Quinnipiac's home opener with a 14-13 win on Saturday afternoon at Yale's Reese Stadium.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-2 on the season, while Bellarmine improves to 1-2 on the year and 1-5 all-time in the series with Quinnipiac.
Feldman scored his sixth goal of the game with 6:21 with the Bobcats on a three-man advantage after Bellarmine was flagged for slashing, offsides and delay of game. Quinnipiac had several chances to go for the tie, but Max Cartor came up with a big save on junior midfielder Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y.) with just over a minute to play, and Feldman missed just wide with a man-up chance with five seconds left.
The Bobcats trailed 11-8 midway through the third, but came back with three unanswered goals to level the score at 11-11. Senior attack Drew D'Antonio (Norwalk, Conn.) started the run with a goal on an extra-man opportunity and Carchietta pulled the Bobcats within 11-10 with an unassisted goal as he curled from around behind the cage to get loose in front. Senior midfielder Kevin Diehl (Towson, Md.) closed out the period on a rush up the middle of the field with 11 seconds left to even the score.
Bellarmine went ahead 12-11 to start the fourth quarter on a goal by Jack Perkins, which was quickly answered by Feldman's fifth with 11:52 to go. The Knights got the lead back with 10;29 left on a goal from Brian Wall, and then stretched the lead to 14-12 with 9:35 left when Ian Miller caught a loose ball out of the air in front of the cage and slipped in a shot for what would prove to be the game-winner after the Bobcats could only score once in the closing minutes.
Feldman gave Quinnipiac a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter with a goal off a feed from Foster Cuomo (Oakville, Ontario), Bellarmine, though, started the second quarter with a 4-1 run to go ahead 7-5 with 3:20 to go after back-to-back Wall goals. Feldman and Cuomo scored 23 seconds apart to tie the score at 7-7, before the Knights scored with 1:07 left on a goal from Tanner Barco to take the lead into the break.
Cartor had six saves in the fourth quarter while allowing two goals to get the win in relief of starter Chase Rose, who had eight saves in three quarters. Wall, Barco, and Andrew Schoeneck each had hat tricks for Bellarmine. Carchietta had two goals and two assists for the Bobcats, while Cuomo had a goal and three assists. Senior goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had 14 saves in the loss for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to NJIT for a road contest.
