
Sydney Young Shines in QU Women's Tennis Loss Against UMass

AMHERST, Massachusetts – The Quinnipiac women's tennis team aimed to get its Spring season off to a good start when it traveled to take on UMass, but fell just short of its goal as the Bobcats lost to the tough Minutewomen, 6-1, at the Bay Road Club in Amherst.
Quinnipiac falls to 3-2 (2-0 MAAC) with the loss, while UMass (2-0, 0-0 A-10) remains undefeated on the season. The loss also snaps the Bobcats three-game winning streak.
Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) picked up two victories for Quinnipiac, giving her the team lead in wins with 24 on the season. Young's two victories also gives her 125 wins for her career, which is 13th all-time in program history.
The Minutewomen took the advantage early in the match by winning the battle in doubles, winning two of the three matches. Quinnipiac's No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and Young defeated Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley, 6-4. With the win, the duo of Horton and Young improve to 15-4, which is tops on the team.
UMass evened the score as the No. 2 doubles team of Ana Yrazusta and Janja Kovacevic paired up to narrowly defeat Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California), 7-5. UMass took the doubles point in the rubber match, as Brittany Collens and Ashley Avery was able to squeak past Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta), 6-2.
UMass was able to pull off the victory with five wins in six singles matches. Woosley took her No. 4 singles match over Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. In the No. 3 singles match, Lu fell to Yrazusta in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Rencheli then stepped up in the No. 1 singles match and challenged Crawford in the first set, but fell 7-5. Rencheli had to retire in the second set due to injury.
Horton followed in the No. 2 singles match against Kovacevic and lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 6 singles match Collins was able to get by Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California), 6-2, 6-3.
The Bobcats were able to end the day with a victory when Young earned her second victory of the day after defeating Martina Bocchi in straight sets in the No. 5 singles match, 7-5, 6-1. The win was Young's eighth win in singles matches this season and pushes her win streak in singles to four straight.
Quinnipiac women's tennis returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 when it hosts the Seton Hall Pirates at the North Haven Health and Racquet Club at 6 p.m.
