
QU Men's Tennis Suffers First Loss of the Season Against South Carolina

HANOVER, New Hampshire – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team was swept by a tough University of South Carolina team which featured three players ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top 100 rankings, 7-0, Saturday evening in the Bobcats 2017 Spring opener.
Quinnipiac's loss to South Carolina was its first of the season as the Bobcats fall to 3-1 (2-0 MAAC) while the Gamecocks improve to 4-0 (0-0 SEC).
Opening in doubles play, Axel Stern (Tustin, California) and Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) took on Gabriel Friedrich and Paul Jubb, falling 6-2 in the No. 2 doubles match. Despite falling in the match, the duo of Stern and Yannone still own the most doubles wins on the team with six.
Alex Fennell and Sam Swank teamed up at No. 1 doubles for South Carolina, taking on Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) and Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) with the Bobcats duo falling, 6-2. In the No. 3 doubles match, Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) fell to Andrew Schafer and Thomas Mayronne, 6-2, giving South Carolina the doubles point.
South Carolina continued its strong play, taking all six singles matches to clinch the match victory. At No. 1 singles, Ezaka took on No. 76 Friedrich, but fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Stern took on Jubb in the No. 4 singles match and despite challenging Jubb in the second set, Stern fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. No. 89 O'Keefe of South Carolina took on Zaretsky in the No. 2 singles draw and Zaretsky fell, 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets.
Patrick Cachapero (Loma Linda, California) took on South Carolina's Schafer in the No. 5 singles match and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 6 singles match, Alper matched up with Fennell and lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Rozenstein took on No. 92 Mayronne in the final match of the day in the No. 3 singles draw and fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 29, when it travels to Boston, Massachusetts to face the Boston University Terriers at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center, beginning at 3 P.M.
