Five Different Goal Scorers Help QU Women’s Soccer Power Past Delaware State, 6-2

Six-Goal Output is the Highest Scoring Total for the Bobcats in a Game Since 2010
Coming into play with an already lethal scoring attack averaging two goals per game, the Bobcats only padded their stats as Quinnipiac now has 14 goals through five games in 2016 for a per-game average of 2.80. The highest scoring team in the MAAC reached six goals in a single-game for the first time since defeating Fairfield Dickinson, 6-0, back on Oct. 31, 2010 – the last time Quinnipiac tallied more than six goals in a single-game came all the way back in 1999 when the Bobcats defeated Iona, 7-0.
Five different players netted goals while nine different players finished the match with at least one point. Sarah Pandolfi (North Haven, Connecticut) led the way with five points (two goals, one assist) including the first multi-goal game and game-winning tally of her career. Jess Fontaine (Enfield, Connecticut) and Nadya Gill (Toronto, Ontario) each finished with one goal and one assist. Al Pelletier (Cheshire, Connecticut) and Katrina Friedman (Syosset, New York) also found their names on the scoresheet with one goal in the win.
Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Ally Grunstein (Warren, New Jersey) acted in the role of playmaker and excelled as she tallied a Quinnipiac Div. I single-game program record three assists on the day. She tied the all-time program record of three set by Sharon Polastry back on Oct. 10, 1994. Joanna Proctor (Frimley, England) and Jenn Maldonado (Bridgeport, Connecticut) also added one assist in the final scoresheet.
In what was just a 2-0 decision last season in the Bobcats' favor, this year's edition featured eight total goals and six in the first half alone as the action picked up right from the opening whistle. Gill began the goal-scoring spree as she was on the receiving end of a Pandolfi cross from the right wing. Consolini started the play with a through ball that found Pandolfi's foot streaking up the right side. After one touch, Pandolfi centered to Gill who only needed a light flick on target for the opening goal in the fourth minute.
Fontaine's first goal of 2016 came in the 10th minute as Grunstein controlled the ball on the far side and whipped a pass deep into the box for the senior midfielder. With Fontaine positioned properly in front of the defender, she one-touched a shot that clanged off the post initially but landed back on her feet for the resounding goal. Fontaine's three points on the day gives her 38 in her career while her 14 career assists place her in a tie for ninth all-time at Quinnipiac.
Delaware State responded with the first of their two goals in the first half as Kayleigh Leschinski banged in a free kick off the crossbar and in from 25 yards out to push it back to a one-goal margin.
Even with the Hornets pushing back, the Bobcats came right back with Pandolfi's first goal of the day. Fontaine started the play by winning a tackle at midfield that pushed the ball to Grunstein heading up the right wing. With tons of time and space on a four-on-one break, Grunstein made the correct play in finding Pandolfi with a pass on the far wing who made no mistake with the goal.
Perhaps the most impressive goal-scoring series came in the 34th minute as Maldonado played a short corner to Gill just outside the box. The freshman forward set up a left-footed strike that was curling towards the net only to be met first by the foot of Pelletier who sent the ball up high past a helpless Delaware State keeper that made it 4-1.
Another Delaware State marker in the 35th minute pushed the deficit back down two goals but with a massive 17-2 shot advantage in the first half, the final margin never seemed in doubt.
The four-goal total in the first half alone stands as the most goals scored by the Bobcats in a single-half since netting five in a 6-0 win over FDU back on Oct. 31, 2010.
Play was much more back-and-forth in the second half as the Bobcats emptied the bench with 22 players seeing time in the win. Pandolfi banged in her second of the match just over one minute into the second half as Proctor's throw in was handled by Pandolfi on the near side. The senior then turned to her right foot and rifled in a high looping shot that hit the bottom side of the crossbar and crossed the line for the first tally of the second half.
Nearly 30 minute passed before a last second Friedman tally pushed the gap to the ultimate final margin of 6-2. Friedman's goal is the first of her career while Grunstein picked up her record-breaking third assist on the sequence.
Armed with a 3-0 record in Hamden, the Bobcats will head to Bryant on Wednesday for a 3 PM start looking to pick up their first road win of the season.
