HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer, searching for its first MAAC victory of the 2016 season, travels to Poughkeepsie, New York on Saturday, Oct. 1 to take on Marist.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bobcats fell in their conference opener vs. Niagara, 1-0, in overtime, despite holding a 12-7 shots advantage. Niagara sophomore Bautista Pedezert's overtime goal off a free kick helped the Purple Eagles escape with the win at the QU Soccer Field. Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, CT) recorded a team-high four shots in the loss for Quinnipiac, while freshman goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made five saves.
SCOUTING THE RED FOXES
Marist enters its first MAAC game at 5-2-1 overall on the season. The Red Foxes topped St. Bonaventure, 2-0, their last time out on Sept. 24, and are currently ranked No. 2 in the latest Northeast National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. Sophomore Cameron Harr has eight of the team's 12 goals in eight games so far in 2016. Sophomore Simon Lund Jorgensen has a team-high four assists and one goal. Goalkeeper Mark Rajovic has allowed nine goals, making 31 saves for a .775 save percentage.
LAST MEETING vs. MARIST
Quinnipiac and Marist played to a 1-1 tie the last time the teams met on Oct. 7, 2015. Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, N.J.) scored with 25 seconds left in the first half to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead, then Marist's Dylan MacVane scored on a header just 11 minutes into the second half to tie things up.
HOT SHOT
The Bobcats have controlled possession much more in their last four games, and the numbers show it. Quinnipiac has attempted 42 of its 76 total shots in 2016 during the last three games, including a season-high 12 shots vs. Niagara its last time out.
WHELAN
Eamon Whelan was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Sept. 19, earning the Bobcats' first major weekly award this year. The freshman has registered four goals and 12 shots, both a team-high, so far this year. Whelan netted the Bobcats' first goal of the year against Louisville on Oct. 29, then scored again in a win over Lafayette on Sept. 4 before recording two goals Quinnipiac's last time out vs. Yale.
IAKOVIDIS
Chrysostomos Iakovidis has started in seven of Quinnipiac's nine games this season. The freshman goalkeeper has tallied three shutouts so far, and has a 0.74 goals-against average thus far with an .868 save percentage (second in MAAC). At this pace, Iakovididis would join the program's all-time single-season Top 10 list in each category:
JAMES DOIG
James Doig (Liverpool, England) started in 38 games during his first two seasons at Quinnipiac, scoring twice with nine assists in that span. He netted a goal in Quinnipiac's loss to Holy Cross on Sept. 17, and has assisted on two goals so far in 2016. Doig suffered a season-ending injury during the third game of the 2015 season.
MAX ROTHENBUECHER
Rothenbuecher, a 2016 co-captain, assisted on Scheiderman's goal vs. UMass Lowell on Sept. 10. He scored two goals and added one assist in 2015. He had the game-winner vs. Canisius in the MAAC Tournament on Nov. 5, 2015. Rothenbuecher, who played in the Bayern Munich FC system for 10 years, has three goals and five assists in his career at Quinnipiac.
RYAN SCHEIDERMAN
Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, NJ) scored Quinnipiac's lone goal in a 2-1 loss vs. UMass Lowell on Sept. 10, heading in a feed from Max Rothenbuecher (Munich, Germany) with 17:11 left in the second half. The senior had two goals last season, which was tied for team-best. He has four goals and four assists in his career at Quinnipiac.
RASHAWN DALLY
Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, CT) has a team-leading two assists for the Bobcats so far, both coming in a win over Lafayette at home on Sept. 4, 2016. The sophomore had one goal and two assists in 2015. He earned a spot on the Jamaican National Under-20 Team this summer, playing in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-20 Qualifiers in June. Jamaica went 2-1 in qualifiers with wins over host Dominican Republic and Dominica.
MATTHEW TAYLOR
The sophomore registered two goals and three assists in 2015 for a team-high seven points. Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) netted the game-winning goal against Manhattan on Oct. 14, 2015, on a 25-yard blast in the third minute.
CONOR MCCOY
The freshman had a goal on Sept. 2 against Fordham, then recorded an assist on Sept. 17 vs. Holy Cross. Conor McCoy played U16 and U17 with Shelbourne United FC, Dublin in the Dublin District Schoolboys League.
QUINNIPIAC PICKED NO. 7 IN MAAC
The Bobcats were picked to finish seventh in the MAAC in a preseason poll of the league's coaches. Quinnipiac received 51 points in the poll, putting it in between Marist in sixth place with 57 points and Canisius in eighth place with 47. Monmouth was selected as the favorite (120 points), while Rider (103 points) finished No. 2.
