West Point, New York – Quinnipiac women's tennis senior Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) was able to win her 100th career victory on day two of competition at the West Point Invite Saturday afternoon. With Horton winning her 100th career match, she became the 21st player in program history to do so. Horton did this while also reaching the Consolation "A" singles semifinals.
Horton wasn't the only Bobcat to have a great day in competition. Freshman Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) was able to reach the Flight "C" semifinals match. While in the Consolation "C" singles bracket, freshman Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) was able to reach the championship match.
Rodriguez dominated the Consolation "C" singles bracket, first by securing an 8-4 win over Colgate's Nicole Szczech. Rodriguez then went on to win her second match of the day by defeating Sophia Moeller of Marist, 8-3. Rodriguez was then able to secure her spot in the finals by beating Army West Point's Sera Martorelli, 8-5.
The day started for the Bobcats in the Flight "B" doubles bracket, where Boise State's Kirsty Venter teamed with freshman Amy Zammarieh (Trumbull, Connecticut) and lost 7-5 to Katie Kim and Thandy Kangwa of Seton Hall. Senior Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) teamed up with Rodriguez and beat Nina Luiggi and Megan Tan of Bryant, 6-1. However, the duo lost in the next round to Army West Point's Danna Funaro and Genevieve McCormick, 6-3.
In the Consolation "A" doubles bracket, Horton and senior Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) teamed up and made up for their teammates loss by defeating Chloe Lant and Callie Morlock, as well as Seton Hall's Melody Taal Anniek Jansen, 6-3 in both matches. The latter ended up being Horton's 100th career victory.
The Bobcats finished strong in the Consolation "B" doubles bracket, with a win from sophomore Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) and Katzarkov over Melanie Post and Brenda Cumpa of Wagner, 6-0. Mircea and Katzarkov then beat Whitney Weisberg and Gianna Insogna of Fordham, 6-4.
Singles play began for the Bobcats when Young earned an early win over Maia Balce of Fordham, 7-6 and 6-0 in straight sets in the Flight "B" singles bracket. However, Young couldn't sustain momentum as she fell in the following round to Army West Point's Kirby Einck, 7-5 and 6-3 in straight sets.
In the same bracket, sophomore Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) earned a win over Army West Point's Nan Porter, 6-3 and 6-2 in straight sets. However, Lu could not earn another victory as she lost in the next round to Carina Ma of Fordham. Ma took the first set 7-5, but Lu battled and won the second 6-4. But Lu was unable to win the final set, as she lost 10-4.
In the Flight "C" singles bracket, sophomore Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) was able to beat Jamie Campisi of Lehigh, 7-6 and 7-5 in straight sets. Lohaphaisan could not sustain the momentum though, as she lost in the following round to Army West Point's Gloria Son, 6-2 and 6-4 in straight sets.
In the same bracket, Katzarkov earned an early win over Madison Pautsch of Wagner, 6-1 and 6-0 in straight sets. This set up a match up with Lehigh's Cassidy Cruz, for a trip to the semifinals. Katzarkov took the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set 3-6. Katzarkov was able to secure the win though, with a 13-11 victory in the final set.
The Bobcats struggled in the Flight "D" singles bracket, as Zammarieh lost to Nathalie Habegger of NJIT. Zammarieh took the first set 6-2, but lost the final two sets 6-2 and 10-5. Mircea suffered the same fate in her match against Stella Fedele of Army West Point. Mircea dropped the first set but was able to battle back and win the second, 6-1, before dropping the third 10-8.
