Horton, Rodriguez Win Singles Championships at West Point Invitational

West Point, New York – Quinnipiac women's tennis senior Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and freshman Layla Rodriguez (Racho Santa Margarita, California) were able to win championships in their respective consolation singles brackets on the final day of competition at the West Point Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The day began for the Bobcats in the Flight "C" singles semifinals, where freshman Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) took on Fordham's Alexis Zobeideh. Katzarkov won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second 4-6. However, she was able to battle back and win the match on a 10-6 final set. Katzarkov then advanced to the finals, where she took on Fordham's Gianna Insogna. Katzarkov took the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but dropped the final two sets 6-4 and 10-6.
In the Consolation "A" singles bracket, Horton was able to defeat Colgate's Lauren O'Brien, 8-4 to advance to the championship. Horton matched up against Rugile Valiunaite of Army West Point in the championship round, where Horton defeated her 9-7, winning the bracket.
In the consolation "C" singles bracket, Rodriguez was able to win the championship due to Bryant's Nina Luiggi withdrawing from the match.
The Bobcats were able to finish the day strong when Horton and senior Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) teamed up in the Consolation "A" semifinals. Horton and Young took on Kahlei Reisinger and Gabriella Bowe of St. Bonaventure, who they were able to beat, 6-3. The Quinnipiac duo was able to advance to the championship round, but the game was not played.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they travel to play UConn for their first duel match of the season. The match-up is set to begin at 3 p.m.
