West Point, New York – The Quinnipiac women's tennis team was able to have a strong showing on the first day of competition at the West Point Invite on the Army West Point campus Friday afternoon. The Bobcats went a combined 13-6 on the day, boasting an 8-3 record in singles competition.
The day started with the Flight "A" singles competition, where senior Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) was the first competitor for the Bobcats. Rencheli drew Lehigh's Christina Auyeung in the Round of 32, but Rencheli was unable to best her, falling 6-3 and 6-0 in straight sets. Senior Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) was in the same bracket, in search for career-win 99, but Nancy Menjivar of Boise State would not allow her to reach the achievement. Menjivar bested Horton 6-0 and 6-3 in straight sets.
In the Flight "B" bracket, senior Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) was able to secure the first win for the Bobcats, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson's Liza Rachenko, 7-6 in a tiebreaker and 6-2 in straight sets. Sophomore Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) was able to secure a win of her own as well when she defeated Olga Ostrovetsky of Binghampton, 6-1 in straight sets.
In Flight "C" singles, sophomore Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) defeated Katarina Pavlovic of Fairleigh Dickinson by default, automatically advancing her to the Round of 16. Freshman Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) looked to advance to the Round of 16 as well, but fell short after losing to Gianna Insogna of Fordham, 6-0 and 6-3 in straight sets. However, Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) got the Bobcats back on track, beating Kahlei Reisinger of St. Bonaventure, 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets.
In the Flight "D" bracket, Amy Zammarieh (Trumbull, Connecticut) got the Bobcats back on track with a win over Sabrina Helm of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-0 in straight sets. Zammarieh didn't stop there, as she was able to muster a victory in the Round of 16 as well. Zammarieh was able to defeat Lehigh's Kirstin Godau, 6-2 and 6-4 in straight sets.
Senior Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) was also able to join her teammate advancing to the semifinals. In the following round, Mircea breezed past Fordham's Whitney Weisberg, 6-3 and 6-0 in straight sets.
In Flight "A" doubles, Lu and Lohaphaisan teamed up to defeat Lauren O'Brien and Jordan Williams of Colgate, 6-4 in the first round. However, that's as far as the Bobcats pair would advance in the bracket. Lu and Lohaphaisan lost in the following round, 7-5, to Marion Bouillin and Ryan Brown of Bryant.
Horton and Young were in the same bracket and automatically advanced to the second round, due to having a bye. However, they would lose in the second round to Colgate's Hannah Fleckenstein and Lauren Hyland, 6-2.
In the Flight "B" doubles bracket, Mircea and Katzarkov teamed up to beat the duo of Claudia Ruiz and Adrianne Alfonso of Sacred Heart, 6-3. But, the duo would lose in the following round to Army West Point's Kirby Einck and Allyson Hayley, 6-1.
Also in the bracket, Zammarieh teamed up with Boise State's Kirsty Venter and the group was able to breeze past the first two rounds of competition. Zammarieh and Venter took on the duo of Destiny Grunin and Alexis Zobeideh from Fordham, defeating them 6-2. In the following round, Zammarieh and Venter coasted past Bryant's Stefanie Arroyo and Briana Leonard, 6-1.
The Bobcats closed the day on a high note, with Rencheli and Rodriguez advancing past the first two rounds. Renchili and Rodriguez had a bye in the first round then faced off against Sera Martorelli and Stella Fedele of Army West Point. Rencheli and Rodriguez were able to muster a 6-3 victory.
