We're Talkin' Playoffs?
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team heads into the 2016 MAAC Men's Tennis Tournament for the second consecutive season. This year, the Bobcats are the No. 2 seed where they will face the No. 3 seed Marist Red Foxes with the winner meeting the winner of the No. 1 seed Monmouth Hawks and No. 4 seed Fairfield Stags in the MAAC Championship.
All-Time vs. Marist
Quinnipiac has yet to pick up a win against Marist as they are 0-4 against the Red Foxes since joining the MAAC, playing their best match yet against the Red Foxes as nearly won, falling 4-3. Kei Ezaka picked up a big win at No. 1 singles to beat Rudolf Kurz while Jonas Kuwert picked up two wins for the Bobcats.
Scouting the Red Foxes
Marist is an impressive 14-4 this season and finished with a share of the MAAC Regular Season title at 6-1. The Red Foxes have won seven of their last eight matches to finish the season, wrapping up the season with a 5-0 win over Rider after falling 7-0 to Monmouth. Dylan Fletcher leads the team with a 26-6 record in singles play, going 5-1 in MAAC play. Kurz and Fredrik Bjerke each won 18 wins, with Kurz going 9-4 at No. 1 singles.
All-Time vs. Monmouth
Quinnipiac improved to 15-4 all-time against the Monmouth Hawks dating back to the 2001-02 season with on April 14. The Bobcats boasted a 12-match winning streak from Apr. 15, 2003 until Apr. 5, 2012. Ezaka, Luke Roser and Ryoma Haraguchi all won two individual matches for the Bobcats.
Scouting the Hawks
Monmouth comes in with a 10-9 overall record in 2015-16 and clinched the No. 1 overall seed after winning the tiebreaker over Quinnipiac and Marist. The Hawks have won three straight matches after falling to the Bobcats back on April 14, with two of the three matches coming at Marist and Saint Peter's. Vidit Vaghela leads the team with a 16-8 record and an 8-2 record at No. 1 singles. Ale Gomez Estrada and Alberto Giuffrida each have 12 wins, with Gomez Estrada going 7-0 in MAAC play. Przemyslaw Filipek and Nicola Pipoli each have 11 wins for the Hawks. In doubles, Christian Vieira and Giuffrida are 8-3 to lead the team in wins.
All-Time vs. Fairfield
Quinnipiac is 3-4 all-time against the Fairfield Stags in program history dating back to the 2007-08 season, winning three of the last four matches between the two teams. The Bobcats are 2-1 against the Stags since joining the MAAC, including this season's 6-1 victory down in Fairfield, Connecticut. Freddie Zaretsky, Kei Ezaka and Luke Roser each won two individual matches for the Bobcats.
Scouting the Stags
Fairfield comes into the playoffs with a 6-14 record and 4-3 mark in MAAC play. The Stags come into the playoffs winning two of their last three matches, with the only loss coming to Quinnipiac. Brad Orban is 14-15 on the season in singles, including 10-9 at No. 1 while Anthony Caputo has 12 wins and Jeffrey Rodgers has 11 wins in singles. Ofir Solomon is 7-6 at No. 2 singles and has 10 wins overall. The doubles team of Solomon and Orban is 5-0 in MAAC play, all at No. 1 doubles and have seen wins overall while Rodgers and Caputo are 4-1 in the MAAC with six wins overall.
Crazy End to the Season
The Bobcats played three matches in the final four days of the regular season, winning all three to secure a 15-7 overall record.
First MAAC Regular Season Title
The Bobcats tied the Marist Red Foxes and Monmouth Hawks for the MAAC Regular Season championship, the first MAAC Regular Season Championship in Quinnipiac program history.
Program Record
The Bobcats set the new program record for wins in a single season in program history with their 15th win of the season, breaking the old record of 14 from the 2004-05 season.
38 Special
Kei Ezaka is rolling this season, setting a new career-high with 38 wins and boosting his career win total to 108. Ezaka has now won nine consecutive singles matches dating back to March 16 and 11 of his last 12 doubles matches. Ezaka's 38 wins this season are tied for the third most in a single season in program history. He finished the season a perfect 7-0 at No. 1 singles in MAAC play.
Freshman Phenom
Freddie Zaretsky has been solid for the Bobcats at No. 2 singles in his first season at Quinnipiac, winning 31 matches to go 31-13. He jumped right into the Bobcats No. 2 spot in the lineup, winning 13 singles matches. Zaretsky has won five of his last six doubles matches.
Nearing a Program Record
Julian Rozenstein continues be a top threat in singles play for the Bobcats, picking up 22 wins in singles play, tied for fourth in program history for singles wins in a single season. Rozenstein has won 32 matches overall this season, including six of his last eight singles matches. Rozenstein has 66 wins in his career through just two seasons as a member of the Bobcats.
On a Roll
Jonas Kuwert comes into the MAAC Tournament with 95 career wins after picking up 29 wins so far this season. He has been playing particularly well as of late, winning nine of his last 11 singles matches dating back to March 15. Kuwert has also won four straight doubles matches and eight of his last nine matches.
An Incredible Season
Luke Roser's 2015-16 season will go down as one of the best in program history as he broke the program record for wins in a career with 41 and doubles wins with 25 after picking up a pair of wins against the ASA New York Avengers. Roser 41-16 this season for the Bobcats with 25 wins in doubles and 16 wins in singles. He has won six of his last eight singles matches while also winning three straight doubles matches and five of his last six. With 41 wins this season, Roser has now won 115 matches in his career, the fifth most in Quinnipiac men's tennis program history.
Anchors Away
Ryoma Haraguchi has come on strong as the No. 6 singles player for the Bobcats, winning a career-high 25 matches this season as well as a career-high 13 singles matches. Haraguchi is just two doubles wins away from tying his career-high 14 from the 2013-14 season. Haraguchi has won three straight singles matches and seven of his last eight while winning five of his last seven doubles matches. Haraguchi also won his 50th career match this season, giving him a 56-47 career record.
