Freddie Zaretsky Advances to Singles Main Draw at ITA Northeast Regional

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Quinnipiac men's tennis sophomore Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) picked up a pair of individual victories in qualifying matches at the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Thursday afternoon, automatically advancing him to the singles main draws competition.
Patrick Cachapero (Loma Linda, California) and Axel Stern (Tustin, California) each won one match in the qualifying round but fell just short of picking up a second win. Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) narrowly lost in the first round, just missing a chance get into the second round to compete for a spot in the singles main draw.
Cachapero matched-up with Richard Pham of Columbia, however, Pham retired from the match, giving Cachapero the 5-5, Ret. victory. Zaretsky then took on Aleksa Petrovic of NJIT. Petrovic gave Zaretsky trouble in the first set, defeating him 7-5. However, Zaretsky took the second set 6-2, then completed the comeback, winning the final and deciding set 6-3.
Rozenstein took on Videt Vaghela of Buffalo in his match and dropped the first set 6-4. Rozenstein came back to win the second set in strong fashion, 6-2, and gave a valiant effort in the third set but lost the tiebreaker 7-6 (8). Stern followed with a win in his match against Gianlucca Massa of Marist, defeating him 6-4 in straight sets.
In the second round of play, Cachapero drew Alberto Guiffeida of Monmouth and lost 6-4 and 6-1 in straight sets. Stern took on William Matheson of Columbia in his second round match-up, who he ultimately fell to, 6-0 and 6-3 in straight sets.
Zaretsky met up with Eddie Grabill of Dartmouth in the second round with a berth in the singles main draw on the line. Zaretsky proved to be up to the task as he defeated Grabill 6-3 in straight sets, earning a spot in the singles main draw bracket.
Several Quinnipiac men's tennis players will still be in action on Friday as main draw singles and doubles get underway. Zaretsky and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) will be competing in the singles main draw, then the two will become teammates in main draw doubles competition as well.
