JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – A career day from senior Jessica Jankowski was just what the doctor ordered as her five-point day led Quinnipiac women's soccer past Saint Peter's, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon from Jaroschak Field. Quinnipiac's first MAAC win of 2015 moves the Bobcats to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Peacocks fall to 2-7 and 0-2 in the MAAC.
Coming in with five career points, Jankowski (Berkeley Heights, New Jersey) doubled her career scoring total as she posted two goals and one assist for a career-high five points. In just her fourth start in 39 career appearances, the five-point effort for Jankowski goes down as the highest scoring output for a Bobcat since Furtuna Velaj tallied a hat trick against Dartmouth on Sept. 17, 2010 (86 games ago).
Also factoring heavily in the scoresheet was Kelly Caruso (Rocky Hill, Connecticut) who picked up three points (one goal, one assist). For Caruso, the three-point effort goes down as a new career-high while it was the fourth multi-point game of her career. The junior midfielder continues her dominance against the Peacocks as she has now registered seven (two goals, three assists) of her 14 career points in three games opposing Saint Peter's.
Amanda Barroca (Bellmore, New York) completed the Quinnipiac scoring with her first goal of 2015 after sharing the team-lead in 2014 with three tallies last season. Jess Fontaine (Enfield, Connecticut) picked up an assist on the second Jankowski goal of the day which was good enough for her team-leading fourth helper of the season.
After some early scoring chances for the Bobcats went by unconverted, Jankowski found the back of the net on a left-footed strike just over 20 minutes into play. Caruso created the scoring chance as she flicked a header to push the ball forward to Jankowski at the top. Jankowski then took one touch from her right to left foot and struck the ball past a diving Saint Peter's goalkeeper.
Just a tick under seven minutes later, Jankowski again came through with a clever finish to make it a two-goal game. Fontaine made a play similar to Caruso's on the goal earlier as she chipped a ball up to Jankowski just inside the Peacocks' defensive box. With the SPU keeper coming out to challenge, Jankowski flicked a chip over the goalie's head and into the back of the net.
A gamely SPU squad responded late in the first half as Kaitlyn Lima finished off a centering pass from Michelle Laz to make it a one-goal game again.
With several Bobcat subs freshly entered later in the first half, Carly Glaser (New City, New York) made an immediate impact as her touch just outside the box made it through the SPU goalkeeper and would have surely led to a goal if not for the keeper dragging Glaser down in the box. With the referee pointing to the middle of the circle, a red card quickly followed as the Peacocks were to play with a man-down for the remainder of play. Caruso was the one selected to take the penalty kick and she made no mistake converting on a low strike to the left of the replacement keeper.
Heading into halftime with the 3-1 advantage, Quinnipiac extended the lead to 4-1 just over six minutes into the second stanza. Jankowski held the ball just past the midfield line and found Barroca streaking up the right sideline. The senior attacker took two touches before she made a move on the Peacock defender. With a clear shooting lane, Barroca lifted a shot that found the opposite corner of the cage.
SPU managed to tally a goal with a man-down at the 68 minute mark to make it 4-2 before the clock eventually wound down to complete the Bobcat victory.
"It's a game that the freshmen will have to learn how to win," said Quinnipiac head coach Dave Clarke. ""Playing away from home, windy conditions, against a team coming off a win, you need your experienced veterans to step up and those senior players did that today."
Natalia Grodzki (Bartlett, Illinois) picked up her fifth win of the season for the Bobcats, making three saves while playing all 90 minutes in net.
The four goals scored in the offensive outburst for QU marked the most in a single-game since Oct. 5, 2012 (45 games ago) when the Bobcats put four on the board against Wagner on the road.
Quinnipiac closes out non-conference play next as a matchup at UMass Lowell looms on Monday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.
