
Alexandra Mircea and Proyfon Lohaphaisan Advance to Next Round at West Point Invite

West Point, New York – Quinnipiac women's tennis freshmen Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) and Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) both advanced to the Round of 16 after the first day of competition at the West Point Invite on the Army West Point campus.
Lohaphaisan and Mircea each recorded their second singles victories of the season after each recording their first career singles wins last weekend at the Quinnipiac invitational. Lohaphaisan maintained her team-leading nine wins with a 9-4 record after going 1-1 individually on the day. Mircea led the Bobcats with two individual victories at the first day of the West Point Invite.
In Flight "A" doubles, Sophia Dzulynsky (Miramar, Florida) and Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) started off the tournament with a big victory over Lehigh's Cassidy Cruz and Grace Lin, 6-4. Later in the afternoon, Dzulynsky and Lu faced the No. 1 seeded Dena Tanenbaum and Michelle Wang from Cornell University in the Round of 16 with a spot in the quarterfinals up for grabs. Dzulynsky and Lu played into a tiebreaker set with Tanenbaum and Wang, but the Big Red duo came away with the 7-6 (3) victory.
Also competing in Flight "A" doubles were Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and Lohaphaisan, teaming up for the third consecutive tournament. The duo faced the No. 2 seeded team in the flight, UConn's Emma Alderman and Lizzy Pletnyeva, but Horton and Lohaphaisan came up just short in a tiebreaker as well, 7-6 (5).
Mircea and Adrian Young (Orange Village, Ohio) took the court for the Bobcats in Flight "B" doubles, picking up the Bobcats second doubles win of the tournament. Opening up their West Point Invite, Mircea and Young faced Akron's Caria Flores and Wavery Wituski and the Bobcats' B doubles team came away with the big 6-3 win. For the third time in doubles, a Bobcats team faced a seeded team in the Round of 16 as Mircea and Young faced Madison Stevens and Jane Stewart, falling 7-5 in a hard fought match.
Lohaphaisan picked up the first singles victory of the afternoon as she slotted into the second singles flight, taking on Sacred Heart's Lindsey Post. After falling in the first set, Lohaphaisan battled back to force a third set and take the match, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4, and advance to the Round of 16.
Mircea, seeded eighth in the bracket, won the other singles match for the Bobcats as she competed in third singles. Mircea drew Bryant's Ashanti Campfield in their matchup in the Round of 32 and cruised to a strong two-set victory, 6-4, 6-4.
Two Bobcats took the court in first singles, starting off with Dzulynsky who played the first singles match of the afternoon. Dzulynsky faced the No. 5 seed Mayu Sato from Fordham. After winning the first set and falling in the second set, Dzulynsky battled to a long third set with Sato but fell to the Ram, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9. Also in first singles action, Lu faced the No. 4 seed Srna Stosljevic from UConn and fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Joining Lohaphaisan in second singles was Horton who faced Fairleigh Dickinson's Gisela Castany in the Round of 32. Horton and Castany played to a tiebreaker in the first set, which Castany won then went on to win the match, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Young took the court in fourth singles, where she drew the No. 2 seed of that bracket in UConn's Gillian Perrotta. Young kept even with Perrotta for much of the match before falling, 6-4, 6-2.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 25 for the second day of competition at the West Point Invite. Play will begin at 9 A.M. with doubles consolation flights before moving on to singles consolation flights later in the morning. With consolation matches done, main draw action will resume in the afternoon.
