Storrs, Conn. – For the second time in five days, the Quinnipiac men's tennis team picked up a flight championship victory as Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) shutout UConn's Jacob Spreyer and Christopher Toner, 6-0, in the Flight "A" championship match at the UConn Invitational Friday afternoon.
For Roser, it is his second consecutive flight championship victory and he tied a career-high in doubles victories with 10, which he also recorded in the 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons. He is now 13-4 to begin his senior season, including an impressive 10-1 mark in doubles play. Roser finished the day with 87 career victories, just 13 shy of 100.
Last weekend at the Connecticut State Championship, Roser won the Flight "B" doubles championship with freshman Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) in the second tournament of the season.
With his 11th individual victory of the season, van Biezen is also off to a terrific start to the season as well. He is 11-6 with a 6-3 mark in doubles play, as he cruised to his 40th career victory just three weeks into his sophomore season.
Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York ) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) teamed up for the second weekend in a row as they reached the Flight "B" doubles championship match but fell to Sacred Heart's Anthony Savio and Derek Chapman, 6-4.
With three doubles victories, Alper set a new career-high in doubles victories with six victories early this season, surpassing his five doubles wins in 2014-15.
Rozenstein maintains his lead for the most wins among the sophomore class with 45 in his career after an 11-6 start to the season. Rozenstein's three doubles wins on Friday gives him six on the season.
Roser and van Biezen teamed up for the first time this season and cruised to the Flight "A" doubles championship with four victories on the day. Opening up the day, Roser and van Biezen faced off against Hartford's William Drumwright and Bryan Einstoss, winning 6-4. The victory avenged last weekend's loss for van Biezen to Drumwright and Einstoss when he was paired with Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany). Roser and van Biezen moved on to the quarterfinals to face Merrimack's Steven Francis and Mikhail Belov where the Bobcat duo doubled up the Warrior duo, 6-3. In the semifinals, it was much of the same for Roser and van Biezen as they cruised into the finals with a 6-1 victory over Bryant's John Templeman and Nick Lamart. In the finals, Roser and van Biezen breezed to the victory with a 6-0 win over Spreyer and Toner for the Flight "A" championship.
In Flight "B" of the UConn Invitational, Alper and Rozenstein paired up for the second consecutive tournament and enjoyed great success. The pair faced Sacred Heart's Anthony Santino and Matthew Suprenant, cruising past the Pioneers duo with a 6-2 win. Alper and Rozenstein were tested in the quarterfinals against Bryant's Corey DiPaola and Joe Sterrey but pulled away with the 7-5 victory. With a spot in the finals on the line, Alper and Rozenstein faced Zac McEntee and Hank Hill and prevailed with the 6-4 win. Alper and Rozenstein's run came to an end in the finals as they lost for the first time in the tournament. The duo fell to Sacred Heart's Savio and Chapman, 6-4, in a hard fought championship match.
Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) teamed up as doubles partners for the UConn Invitational in Flight "A" as well. In the first round, Ezaka and Haraguchi fell to Sacred Heart's Brian Power and Karan Narula, 6-2. In the Flight "A" back draw, Ezaka and Haraguchi nearly picked up their first win of the day but came up just short to UConn's Jonathon Edwards and Justin Warren, 7-5.
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 with day two of the UConn Invitational as singles play begins at 9 A.M. and runs through Sunday afternoon.
